From Coffee to Craters: A Day in Costa Rica’s Natural Wonderland
In search of a new adventure beyond the waves, I embarked on a tour of Costa Rica’s lush landscapes. Join me as I explore coffee plantations, volcanic craters, and breathtaking waterfalls.
A Coffee Lover’s Paradise
As a nomadic surfer, I’m always on the lookout for new adventures that take me beyond the waves. So when I found myself in Costa Rica, I decided to take a break from the surf and explore the lush landscapes of Alajuela Province. The San Jose Tour promised a day filled with coffee, volcanoes, and waterfalls—three things that sounded like the perfect blend of excitement and relaxation.
Our first stop was the Doka Coffee Estate, where the aroma of freshly brewed coffee greeted us like an old friend. As someone who spends countless mornings watching the sunrise over the ocean with a cup of coffee in hand, this was a dream come true. We were treated to a delicious breakfast and a fascinating tour of the coffee plantation. The guides shared ancient techniques used in cultivating and roasting the beans, and I couldn’t help but appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into every cup. It was a reminder of the simple pleasures in life, much like catching the perfect wave.
The Majesty of Poas Volcano
After our caffeine fix, we headed to Poas Volcano National Park. The drive was an adventure in itself, with winding roads that offered glimpses of the breathtaking scenery. Our guide, Jose, and driver, David, made the journey enjoyable with their friendly banter and informative insights.
Arriving at the volcano, we were greeted by a noticeable change in temperature and the lush vegetation of the cloud forest. Despite the rain and clouds, we were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the crater. Standing there, I felt a sense of awe at the raw power of nature, much like the feeling I get when riding a massive wave. The park’s museum added to the experience, offering insights into the world’s volcanoes and the diverse ecosystems they support.
Chasing Waterfalls at La Paz
Our final destination was the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a place that felt like stepping into a tropical paradise. The trails led us through a vibrant rainforest, where the sound of flowing rivers and cascading waterfalls created a symphony of nature. It was a stark contrast to the ocean’s roar, yet equally mesmerizing.
The gardens also featured an animal refuge, home to birds, reptiles, monkeys, and big cats. While I prefer seeing wildlife in their natural habitat, it was heartening to know these animals were being cared for. We enjoyed a tasty lunch amidst the lush surroundings before embarking on a walk to the waterfalls. The sight of the water tumbling down multiple levels was nothing short of breathtaking.
By the end of the day, our group of strangers had become friends, sharing stories and laughter as we made our way back. The San Jose Tour was a reminder that sometimes, the best adventures happen when you step away from the familiar and embrace the unknown. Whether you’re a surfer chasing waves or a traveler seeking new experiences, this tour offers a glimpse into the heart of Costa Rica’s natural beauty.
