Exploring Portugal’s Atlantic Coast: A Family Adventure from Alcobaça to Obidos
Eager to explore the Atlantic coast with my children, I embarked on a journey through Alcobaça, Nazaré, and Obidos. Join me as I share our family-friendly adventure filled with history, stunning views, and delightful local cuisine.
A Day of Discovery: From Alcobaça to Nazaré
Our journey began in the charming town of Alcobaça, where the Monastery of Alcobaça stands as a testament to Gothic architecture and a poignant love story. As we approached the monastery, the towering columns and intricate facade captured the attention of my children, who were eager to learn about the history behind this magnificent structure. The guide shared the tale of Pedro and Inês, a story of love and tragedy that resonated with all of us, especially my eldest, who is a budding history enthusiast.
The monastery’s vast halls and serene atmosphere provided a perfect backdrop for a family exploration. My youngest two were fascinated by the sheer size of the building, and we spent a good amount of time wandering through the corridors, imagining life in the medieval era. It was a wonderful opportunity to engage the kids in a bit of history while allowing them to roam freely in a safe environment.
Coastal Wonders and Culinary Delights
Leaving Alcobaça, we made our way to Nazaré, a coastal town known for its stunning ocean views and vibrant culture. Our guide led us to Rua da Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, where we were greeted with breathtaking vistas of the Atlantic Ocean. The kids were thrilled to see the famous “Sitio” viewpoint, offering a panoramic view of the lower town and its expansive beach.
We took a leisurely stroll along the beach, collecting seashells and watching surfers tackle the impressive waves at Praia do Norte. It was a perfect blend of relaxation and excitement, with plenty of opportunities for the kids to play and explore. Lunchtime brought us to Largo do Elevador, where we indulged in authentic Portuguese cuisine. The local dishes were a hit with the whole family, and the friendly atmosphere made it a memorable dining experience.
Stepping Back in Time in Obidos
Our final stop was the medieval village of Obidos, a place that seemed to transport us back in time with its cobbled streets and ancient ramparts. The kids were captivated by the idea of walking through a real-life castle town, and we spent the afternoon exploring the narrow alleys and quaint shops.
The highlight for the children was undoubtedly the chance to try ginjinha, a cherry liqueur served in a chocolate cup. While I enjoyed a small taste, the kids were more interested in the chocolate, which they devoured with delight. As we wandered through Obidos, I couldn’t help but appreciate the blend of history and charm that made this village a perfect family destination.
Reflecting on our day, I realized how this tour offered a seamless blend of education, adventure, and relaxation. It was a reminder of the joy of discovering new places with my children, and how travel can be both enriching and enjoyable for the whole family. If you’re looking for a family-friendly adventure along Portugal’s Atlantic coast, I highly recommend the Atlantic Coast Tour for an unforgettable experience.
