Discovering Alcobaça: A Romantic Family Getaway
Nestled in the heart of Portugal, Alcobaça offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and romance, making it an ideal destination for a Valentine’s Day family getaway. With its mild weather and rich heritage, this charming town invites families to explore its wonders while enjoying quality time together.
Start your journey with a visit to the Alcobaça Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stands as a testament to Portugal’s medieval past. The monastery’s gothic architecture and the tragic love story of D. Pedro I and Inês de Castro provide a captivating backdrop for a family adventure. As you wander through the cloisters and chapels, take a moment to appreciate the intricate details and imagine the lives of those who once walked these halls.
For a more interactive experience, consider joining the Medieval Óbidos and Alcobaça Tour on February 8th. This private tour offers a delightful exploration of the medieval town of Óbidos, where you can stroll along cobblestone streets and admire the colorful facades of traditional houses. The tour includes a traditional lunch, allowing you to savor local flavors while bonding with your loved ones. As one reviewer noted on December 28, 2023:
Obidos, don’t miss it! - I selected to do only Obidos and I am glad that I did. Nothing felt rushed. I love Medieval towns, especially walled cities. If you aren’t afraid of heights you can walk the 3 km atop the walls that encircle the village. There is an excellent book store there inside a church, lots of little shops, and few nice restaurants and all around cool place.
Embracing the Coastal Charm of Nazaré
On February 9th, embrace the coastal charm of Nazaré, a picturesque fishing village known for its giant waves and vibrant traditions. The Nazaré and Alcobaça Tour offers a unique opportunity to explore this scenic hamlet while learning about its cultural heritage. Begin your day with a visit to the Alcobaça Monastery, where you can delve deeper into its history before heading to Nazaré.
In Nazaré, the colorful local traditions come to life as you stroll through the town center and visit the Dry Fish Market. Here, you can meet the Nazarenes and witness the age-old practice of drying fish on the beach. The tour also includes a visit to the lighthouse, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the coastline and the famous waves that attract surfers from around the world.
As you explore Nazaré, take the time to sample the exquisite local seafood, a highlight of the region’s culinary offerings. The gentle breeze and stunning vistas create a serene atmosphere, perfect for a romantic family outing. A recent review from October 9, 2024, captures the essence of this experience:
A Great Day in Nazare and Alcobaca - My wife and I enjoyed our trip with Carlos immensely. Carlos picked us up at our hotel right on time and we headed out of Porto to Alcobaca. On the drive Carlos shared a lot of the history of Portugal, its geography and political evolution. We arrived at Alcobaca right as the monastery was opening, allowing us a relatively uncrowded tour of the facility. Then off to Nazare where we were able to drive up to and park right at the lighthouse because of a pass that Carlos had purchased (no need to make the long walk or pay for a ride on a tuk-tuk). We were able to climb onto the roof of the museum/lighthouse to view the waves and the beach as well as the village of Nazare itself.
