- Basilica Papale e Sacro Convento di San Francesco d’Assisi - The Basilica of St. Francis is a revered site and a major destination for Christian pilgrims, attracting millions of visitors annually. Since 1230, it has safeguarded the mortal remains of the Saint. Tradition holds that Francis himself selected his burial site, a place where “lawless” individuals, condemned by justice, were typically interred. Francis was canonized just two years after his death on July 16, 1228, and the following day, the foundation stone for his grand Basilica was laid. This complex is of immense artistic value, both architecturally and for its exquisite frescoes and interior decor. The Upper Basilica boasts a Gothic, bright, and slender design, while the Lower Basilica is more subdued and austere. The heart of the Basilicas is the Crypt with the Tomb of St. Francis. Other notable sites include the Basilica of Santa Chiara and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
- Basilica di Santa Chiara - The Church of Santa Chiara is the second most visited site in Assisi after the Basilica of San Francesco. Inside, it houses the body of Santa Chiara. Visitors can witness two miracles of Saint Clare: one performed for her sister Agnes and the other, the miracle of bread, for all the sisters of the San Damiano community. The Basilica, constructed with the distinctive white and pink stone of Mount Subasio, stands on a spacious square offering views of the valley and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Chiara Scifi (16 July 1194 – 11 August 1253) was an Italian religious figure, collaborator of Francis of Assisi, and founder of the Poor Clares order. She was canonized as Saint Clare in 1255 by Alexander IV in the cathedral of Anagni.
- Assisi - Assisi is the city where Saint Francis, the patron saint of Italy, and Saint Clare lived and passed away. The earliest evidence of human presence in Assisi dates back to the Neolithic era. Still encircled by a formidable wall, the city retains the characteristics of a typical Umbrian village. Its highlights include the magnificent Basilica of San Francesco and the imposing Rocca Maggiore. As the homeland of St. Francis, Assisi is deeply ascetic, and he was known as “the poor man of Assisi” for his choice to renounce material possessions and lead a simple life in spiritual harmony.
- Perugia - Perugia boasts a remarkable Etruscan center and is a significant medieval city, preserving precious remnants of its illustrious historical periods. Today, it is a prominent cultural and tourist destination and has been the prestigious seat of the University of Studies for over 700 years. Perugia is vibrant both culturally and socially, full of “secrets” to uncover. Exploring it with curiosity is recommended to fully appreciate the excitement and allure of discovery. The Rocca Paolina serves as the gateway to the Acropolis. By traversing it with escalators, amidst historical remnants and contemporary elements, one ascends to the city’s heart, a popular meeting place for locals and students. Besides its architecture and art, Perugia is globally renowned for its chocolate. Each October, it hosts Eurochocolate, Europe’s largest chocolate fair, and is home to the historic Perugina brand, delighting us with its confections since 1907.
- Fontana Maggiore - At the heart of Perugia’s historic center is Piazza IV Novembre, home to the most significant historical buildings and the stunning Fontana Maggiore. In this beautiful square, one can admire the imposing Duomo, the Palazzo dei Priori, the Town Hall, and the Logge di Braccio. Fontana Maggiore features a series of ornate statues and a central bronze basin overflowing with water.
- Pozzo Etrusco - The Etruscan Well is one of the most captivating attractions. Located in Piazza Danti, this well dates back to the third or fourth century B.C. and showcases the architectural and engineering prowess of this ancient civilization. With a depth of 37 meters and a diameter of 5 meters, this colossal well features a decorated bridge spanning its cavity. Visitors can descend to the bottom to appreciate its proportions.
- Palazzo dei Priori - Palazzo dei Priori is a grand building situated opposite the Cathedral of Perugia in Piazza IV Novembre. This ancient structure has been central to the city since the 14th century and has played a significant role in Perugia’s politics. The front of the building features a large semicircular staircase and a series of ornate three-light windows. The upper part of the palace is adorned with battlements, giving it a fairytale-like appearance, reminiscent of a castle. The palace now serves as the council and town council’s seat and houses the National Gallery of Umbria, founded in 1878, which contains numerous artworks and is one of the region’s most important museums.
- Perugia Cathedral - The Cathedral of San Lorenzo is located in the heart of Perugia’s historic center. Constructed three times during the 1300s and 1400s, its exterior features cladding in local white and red stone only along the building’s lower band, with the rest of the decoration remaining incomplete.
- Casa del Cioccolato Perugina - Perugia is renowned worldwide for its chocolate. Each October, the city hosts Eurochocolate, Europe’s largest chocolate fair, and is home to the historic Perugina brand, delighting us with its sweets since 1907. Located outside the city center, La Perugina offers a Chocolate House and a historical museum, providing a fantastic and delicious alternative attraction, perfect for families, especially those with a sweet tooth! The factory tour lasts just over an hour, during which visitors can observe the production line in action, enjoy a chocolate tasting session, and explore the historical museum.
