Whales, Dolphins, and Rainbows: A Marine Adventure in the Azores
Drawn by the allure of the Atlantic’s rich marine life, I embarked on the Azores Marine Wildlife Tour. Join me as I recount the exhilarating encounters with whales, dolphins, and more, guided by passionate biologists and naturalists.
Setting Sail on the Azores
The Azores had long been on my list of must-visit destinations, and the opportunity to join the Azores Marine Wildlife Tour was the perfect excuse to finally make the trip. As a marine biologist, the chance to explore the Atlantic’s rich biodiversity with fellow biologists and naturalists was an irresistible draw. The anticipation of encountering whales, dolphins, and other marine life in their natural habitat was exhilarating.
Our first day on the water was nothing short of magical. The weather was perfect, with calm seas and clear skies, ideal conditions for spotting marine life. Our guide, Becky, was a wealth of knowledge, sharing insights about the cetaceans we encountered. We were fortunate to see five different species of whales and dolphins, including common dolphins, spotted dolphins, sperm whales, orcas, and bottlenose dolphins. The sight of these majestic creatures in their natural environment was awe-inspiring. We also spotted six loggerhead turtles and several Portuguese man-o-wars, adding to the day’s excitement.
Navigating the Swells
The following days brought a mix of challenges and rewards. A planned marine bird trip was canceled due to rough sea conditions, but the team quickly arranged for another whale-watching excursion. The morning of our second day at sea was rough, with high swells that tested even the most seasoned travelers. Despite my experience on the water, I found myself succumbing to seasickness, a humbling reminder of the ocean’s power.
Our guide was incredibly supportive, ensuring everyone felt comfortable and safe. Despite the challenging conditions, we added a new species to our sightings—a large baleen whale, though the rough seas made it difficult to identify precisely. We also saw more spotted dolphins, sperm whales, and another loggerhead turtle. Returning to land, I felt a renewed respect for the ocean’s unpredictable nature.
A Serene Evening at Sea
After a brief rest, we returned to the water for an evening excursion. The swells had eased, and a beautiful rainbow arched across the sky, setting the stage for a serene and unforgettable experience. We watched in awe as four sperm whales performed deep dives, their flukes slicing through the water, while a young sperm whale lingered at the surface.
The evening was filled with the melodic clicks of the sperm whales, captured by the hydrophone, creating a symphony of the sea. As we circled the island, the waves reminded us of their power, drenching us in a salty embrace. Despite the unexpected sea salt bath, the experience was exhilarating and left us with memories to cherish.
The Azores Marine Wildlife Tour was a testament to the beauty and wonder of the ocean. The dedication of the team to respecting and preserving marine life was evident throughout the journey. For anyone with a love for the sea and its inhabitants, this tour is an experience not to be missed.
