A Nostalgic Journey Through the Hills of Sikkim and Darjeeling
Drawn by the allure of the hills and the promise of new adventures, I embarked on a journey to Sikkim and Darjeeling. Join me as I recount my leisurely exploration of these mesmerizing landscapes, where every moment was a step back in time.
Arrival in Gangtok: A Gentle Introduction to the Hills
As I stepped off the train at New Jalpaiguri Railway Station, a familiar sense of nostalgia washed over me. The rhythmic clatter of the train wheels had been my companion for the journey, a comforting reminder of my many travels across Europe. But now, I was in a different world, one that promised new adventures and the allure of the unknown. The drive to Gangtok was a leisurely one, winding through lush landscapes that seemed to whisper stories of the past. Our hotel, Nestled Inn, was aptly named, offering a cozy retreat amidst the bustling town. The evening was spent wandering the local markets, where the vibrant colors and friendly faces made me feel right at home.
Exploring Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir: A Day of Reflection
The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, we set out for Tsomgo Lake. The journey was a scenic one, with the road meandering through snow-capped peaks and verdant valleys. The lake itself was a sight to behold, its oval shape and serene waters reflecting the sky above. As I stood there, watching the Brahmini ducks glide gracefully across the water, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of peace. Nearby, the Baba Mandir stood as a testament to the region’s rich spiritual heritage. The air was crisp and filled with the scent of pine, a perfect backdrop for quiet contemplation. Returning to Gangtok, I spent the evening strolling along M G Road, soaking in the local culture and savoring the flavors of the region.
The Charm of Darjeeling: A Journey Through Time
Our journey continued to Darjeeling, a place that seemed to exist in a time of its own. The drive was a delightful one, with stops at the Do Drul Chorten Stupa and Enchey Monastery, each offering a glimpse into the region’s spiritual tapestry. In Darjeeling, the highlight was undoubtedly the view of Kanchenjunga from our room. As the sun rose, painting the peaks in hues of gold and pink, I was reminded of the many sunrises I’d witnessed from train windows across Europe. The days were spent exploring the town, visiting the Tiger Hill Observation Deck, Batasia Loop, and the Happy Valley Tea Estate. Each location had its own story to tell, a narrative woven into the fabric of the hills. As I prepared to leave, I felt a pang of longing, a desire to linger a little longer in this enchanting place.
