• Giza Plateau - The Giza pyramid complex, also known as the Giza Necropolis, is located on the Giza Plateau in Greater Cairo, Egypt. It includes the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with their associated pyramid complexes and the Great Sphinx of Giza. These structures were built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt. The site is situated at the edge of the Western Desert, about 9 km (5 mi) west of the Nile River in Giza, and roughly 13 km (8 mi) southwest of Cairo’s city center. The Great Pyramid and the Pyramid of Khafre are the largest pyramids constructed in ancient Egypt and have long been symbols of ancient Egypt in Western culture. The Great Pyramid was listed by Antipater of Sidon as one of the Seven Wonders of the World during Hellenistic times. It is the oldest of the ancient Wonders and the only one still in existence.
• Great Pyramid of Cheops (Khufu) - Khufu’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, now buried beneath the village of Nazlet el-Samman. Diabase paving and nummulitic limestone walls have been discovered, but the site has not been fully excavated. The valley temple was connected to a causeway, which was largely destroyed when the village was built.
• Khafre’s Pyramid - Khafre’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, the Sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple contained several statues of Khafre, some of which were found in a well in the temple floor by Mariette in 1860. Additional statues were discovered during later excavations by Sieglin (1909-10), Junker, and Reisner.
• Menkaure Pyramid - Menkaure’s pyramid complex includes a valley temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple, and the king’s pyramid. The valley temple once housed several statues of Menkaure. During the 5th Dynasty, a smaller ante-temple was added to the valley temple. The mortuary temple also contained several statues of Menkaure.
• Great Sphinx - The Great Sphinx of Giza, also known simply as the Sphinx, is a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with a lion’s body and a human head. It faces directly from west to east and is located on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The Sphinx’s face is generally believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre. Carved from the bedrock, the original shape of the Sphinx has been restored with layers of blocks. It measures 73 m (240 ft) in length from paw to tail, 20 m (66 ft) in height from the base to the top of the head, and 19 m (62 ft) in width at its rear haunches. It is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and is believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during Pharaoh Khafre’s reign (c. 2558-2532 BC).
• Saqqara (Sakkara) Pyramids - Continue your day tour to Saqqara, located 27 km southwest of Cairo. Visit the Step Pyramid, built for King Zoser, which is considered a significant part of the evolution of pyramid construction, transitioning from simple mastabas to the more recognized pyramid form. It is the smallest Old Kingdom pyramid but is significant for the discovery of Pyramid Texts, spells for the king’s afterlife inscribed on the walls of its subterranean chambers. This tradition of funerary texts began with Unas’s pyramid and continued in the pyramids of subsequent rulers, through the end of the Old Kingdom and into the Middle Kingdom with the Coffin Texts that form the basis of the Book of the Dead.
• Pyramid of Teti - The Pyramid of Teti, located in Saqqara, Egypt, is an intriguing ancient structure built as the final resting place for Pharaoh Teti. • Mastaba of Ti - The Mastaba of Ti is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Saqqara. Discovered by Auguste Mariette, the mastaba contains two serdabs. The tomb’s walls depict various scenes of everyday life.
• Memphis and Sakkara - Continue your day tour to Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt, where you can see the colossal statue of Ramses II and the great Alabaster Sphinx. This city dates back to 3100 B.C. (1 hr). At the end of the tour, you will be transferred back to your hotel.
