Unique experience - Seeing Chichén Itzá and learning about the history of the Mayan culture was super interesting! The guide we had on the bus did a great job educating us. My only complaints would be the additional cost for life jacket for the cenote, some things weren’t included in the itinerary (meeting with a shaman, which I opted out of due to personal beliefs), and we only got 30 minutes to be in Vallodid so didn’t really get to explore it. I wish we could’ve had more time there. The tequila tasting was great - so delicious! Overall it was a good experience just a lot to try and fit in the timeframe.

Get a private tour instead, or just go to a cenote - Honestly this tour was a mixed bag. The day before the tour we were contacted by the tour operator to pay for additional charges. What isn't mentioned is that Chichen Itza has a local tax of $39 US per adult. There is also a mandatory life jacket rental at the cenote of $8 per person and a locker fee of $8 (p.s. the lockers are tiny so we needed two for my wife, daughter, and me). So before they even picked us up the $211 tour went up by another $126. Since we are talking about additional costs I will jump ahead a bit and mention that you also have to buy drinks at the buffet. Three .6L waters and a .5L coke was $22. The van that picked us up at the resort was not the entire tour group. The driver didn't mention that this was intermediary transportation when he drove us to Cuidad Playa Carmen, stopped in an ally and parked. After sitting there for 25 minutes a bus pulled up and we met the rest of the tour and the tour guides for the expedition. The tour guides then proceeded to manually verify that everyone had paid the additional fees and slowly got everyone loaded on to the bus. We then had a 2 hour bus ride to Vallolodid. We had 20 minutes to walk around the square in and wonder why we stopped in the first place, since there is nothing to see or do there, before being herded back on the bus to drive to the cenote. At the cenote they crowded an entire bus full of people into a small hut (and this was in 95F (34C) heat with 85% humidity) where a shaman lit incense and blessed us all. Once the formalities were finished we were herded through the gift shop while our tour guides went off to get our tickets to go down to the cenote. After a 30 minute wait where the tour guides verified our tour packages and individually handed out each ticket we were guided to the changing area to get into our swim suits to go down into the cenote. The stairs going down to the cenote were slick and terrifying, but the cenote was the most amazing part of this trip. It felt like 9,000 degree up on the surface with 2000% humidity and mosquitos large enough to carry off a Pomeranian, but down in the cenote was a different world! I still haven't figured out why they didn't build the village down in the cenote. It was amazing! But all to quickly our time was up and we had to leave the cenote for lunch. It was a buffet... The drinks were ridiculously overpriced After lunch we had the tequila tasting. The tequila we tasted was great. It was $110 per bottle so not too great but, the small shot we got was nice. We then boarded the bus for the 1 hour 15 minute minute ride to Chichen Itza. We got to Chichen Itza just after 1500 and once again had to wait for the tour guides to get the tickets. There are over 2,000 vendors vying for your attention (read that as money). With the heat, humidity, and people pawing at you for money the Mayan history of human sacrifice starts to seems pretty reasonable. The park closes at 1700 so as soon as our tour guide finished his tour of the ruins we had ~10 minutes to run around and take pictures. We were then loaded back on the bus for the 2 hour 45 minute drive back to Playa Carmen where we got on another van that took us the forty minutes back to our hotel. The tour was 13.5 hours of which maybe, if I'm being generous 4 hours and 20 minutes were spent not on the bus. 9 hours and 10 minutes of the day were spent sitting on a bus or in a van. This isn't to bash the tour guides we had though. Balthazar, Beto, and Rodrigo were awesome and doing the best they could with the tour schedule that was thrust upon them. Beto in particular was fantastic! He was very knowledgeable about the Mayan culture and history and he had a delightfully sly sense of humor.

Not the worst - The trip overall wasn’t terrible, but it turned out to be way more expensive than was initially advertised, and it ended up feeling like a tourist trap. The day before we received an email that our hotel was too far out and that there was an extra $10/person charge. But all of the hotels were around the same area, so I don’t understand why that charge was necessary. Then the guide asked if we wanted to donate money for some program. Um, maybe take the extra money that you’re charging us for everything and use some of that. The 20 min stop in Valladolid is kind of unnecessary because you can’t see much in that amount of time. Swimming in the cenote was great, but the tequila tasting that they advertise is just one shot, so it shouldn’t be advertised as a perk of the tour. We also spent too much time at the second stop and it constantly felt like the guides and locals were hounding us to buy things. We got followed around by someone in the gift shop and felt to uncomfortable to stay. Then when we finally got to Chichen Itza, we spent so much time outside of the site with the guide once again trying to sell us things. By the time we got inside, we only got about an hour there before it started downpouring and we had to leave early. Honestly I would have rather just spent most of the day at Chichen Itza and I wish I didn’t feel like I was constantly being sold things when we already paid a lot for the tour.

Good Experience! - There should be more free time in Chichen Itza. The vest for the Cenote should be included with the tour.
