Sipping Through History: A Rum Tasting Adventure at Casa Bacardí
In search of a new adventure, I set sail to Casa Bacardí for a rum tasting experience. Join me as I explore the rich flavors and history of Bacardí’s premium rums in the heart of Cataño.
Setting Sail to Casa Bacardí
The sun was blazing down on the Caribbean, and the ocean breeze was calling my name. I decided to take a break from the waves and explore something a little different—rum tasting at Casa Bacardí in Cataño. The journey began with a ferry ride from Old San Juan, a short and sweet 12-minute cruise that offered a refreshing escape from the heat. I arrived at the port an hour early, eager to ensure I wouldn’t miss the 2:30 pm rum tasting tour. The ferry was a cool haven, and I was grateful for the portable fan I brought along to combat the scorching temperatures.
As I stepped off the ferry, the anticipation of tasting premium rums was palpable. The journey to Casa Bacardí was smooth, and the convenience of the ferry and shuttle made the trip worthwhile. The pavilion at Casa Bacardí, designed by an artist known for gravity-defying sculptures, was a sight to behold. It looked like a stone tent pitched right in the center of the property, and it was here that I received my complimentary welcome cocktail. Though the daiquiri was more reminiscent of lemonade, it was a refreshing start to the adventure.
A Taste of Bacardí’s Legacy
The tour began with a deep dive into the history of the Bacardí family and their journey into the rum business. Our guide was knowledgeable and passionate, sharing stories that brought the Bacardí legacy to life. Unfortunately, we had to skip a part of the tour due to the building overheating, but our guide quickly adapted, leading us into an air-conditioned space where the storytelling continued.
The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the rum tasting. We sampled four different rums, each with its own unique flavor profile. From mild to robust, the rums offered a spectrum of tastes that delighted the palate. The experience was enhanced by a chocolate pairing, which complemented the rich flavors of the rum. It was a sensory journey that left me with a newfound appreciation for the craft of rum making.
Souvenirs and Sunsets
After the tasting, we were escorted to the gift shop, a treasure trove of Bacardí memorabilia. While the selection was minimal, it was a reminder of Bacardí’s global impact and the legacy they continue to build. I picked up a few souvenirs to remember the day, each item a token of the experience.
As the sun began to set, I made my way back to the ferry, reflecting on the day’s adventure. The rum tasting at Casa Bacardí was a delightful detour from my usual beach escapades, offering a blend of history, flavor, and culture. It was a reminder of the rich tapestry of experiences the Caribbean has to offer, beyond the waves and sandy shores. Until next time, I’ll be dreaming of the ocean and the next adventure that awaits.
