After a one-hour car journey, during which you’ll encounter the natural beauty of Crete as well as quaint villages nestled close to the White Mountains, and passing through Krapi and the Askifou plateau, we’ll arrive at Imbros village. This is where our hike begins, specifically, the northern entrance of the gorge. The first kilometer of the trail is relatively easy, characterized by low and wide cliffs. However, they gradually become taller and increasingly narrow. We’ll navigate through the tightest section, Stenada, which is only 1.5 meters wide. Later, we’ll spot a natural arch, Xepitira, located on the southern part of the trail. The gorge is home to numerous aromatic plants and herbs such as marjoram, dictamus, sage, thyme and many more, as well as an array of trees like cypress, prunus, and ambelitsea. Wild goats roam free, feeding themselves. Locals have historically used this trail for journeys to Chania, and during the Second World War, the Allied forces also used this path. Once we reach Komitades, there’s an option to lunch, followed by a taxi ride back to Imbros where we parked the car. Throughout the journey, you can enjoy splendid views of the Libyan Sea.
