Chiang Rai to Chiang Kong - Pakbeng, Lao
Chiang Khong - Chiang Khong (เชียงขà¸à¸‡) is a quaint town in Northern Thailand’s Chiang Rai Province. It’s primarily a transit point for travelers heading to Laos, serving as the Thai counterpart to the Lao border town of Huay Xai, located just across the Mekong River. After passing through Chiang Khong, you’ll cross the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge No. 4 and take a bus (included) to cross the border. Feel free to bring food or drinks for the journey.
Huay Xai - Huay Xai, the capital of Bokeo Province in Laos, is often seen as a stopover for travelers heading to other destinations. However, this town offers a beautiful landscape perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and biking. Its relaxed atmosphere is ideal for enjoying local beer, relaxing by the Mekong River, and savoring authentic Laotian cuisine. The journey from the Chiang Khong border to Huay Xai takes about 30 minutes.
Pak Beng - At around 9:00 AM, a van will pick you up from your hotel in Huay Xai and take you to a luxury boat bound for Pak Beng. This will be your first time embarking on one of our luxury boats for a downstream cruise on the Mekong River. The boat will make its first stop in Pak Tha for necessary document signing, followed by a visit to a Khmu Hill tribe village along the Mekong. Our guide will explain the lifestyle and origins of these rural communities. Lunch will be served on board, and you’ll have the afternoon to relax and enjoy seasonal snacks and drinks. The boat will arrive in Pak Beng before sunset, where you’ll stay overnight. Pak Beng is a small village in Laos, situated on the Mekong River, roughly halfway between the Thai border at Huay Xai and Luang Prabang. It is connected by a paved road to Oudomxay Province along the Nam Beng River. Please note that you need to book your own accommodation in Pak Beng.
Pakbeng to Luang Prabang, Lao
Pak Ou Caves - The boat departs Pak Beng at 8:00 AM. Use your free time in the morning to ask our guide any questions you may have about Luang Prabang and Laos. Lunch will be served on board. In the afternoon, we’ll make two stops. First, we’ll visit the renowned Pak Ou Caves (Tham Ting), home to thousands of Buddha images. The second stop will be at a Lao village known as Whisky Village, where our guide will provide information about locally made rice whisky, and you’ll have the opportunity to taste it if you wish. You’ll also have time to explore the village, its temple, and local artisans.
Luang Prabang - The boat is expected to dock in Luang Prabang around 5:00 PM, and we will transfer you to your hotel. Please inform us of your hotel details for drop-off. Luang Prabang boasts both natural and historical attractions. Phou Si, located in the town center, offers panoramic views of the town and river system and is a popular spot for watching the sunset over the Mekong River. At the end of the main street, a night market features stalls selling shirts, bracelets, and other souvenirs. Notable historical sites include the Haw Kham Royal Palace Museum and the Wat Xieng Thong temple. The town is also dotted with many smaller wats. Every morning at sunrise, monks walk through the streets in a procession to accept alms from local residents, an event that attracts many tourists. Luang Prabang was named ‘Best City’ in the Wanderlust Travel Awards 2015.
