As the journey continues across the plains, there is a brief stop in the small town of Springfield to capture a photo with its famous giant doughnut statue.
From Springfield, it’s a 45-minute drive along “the Great Alpine Highway” over the mountains to the Castle Hill/Kura Tawhiti conservation area. The route crosses Porters Pass (900 m elevation), passes Lake Lyndon, and goes through several High Country stations (large farms) before reaching the destination.
Castle Hill/Kura Tawhiti is a labyrinth of enormous limestone boulders nestled in the heart of the Southern Alps. Once submerged by an inland ocean, the area now stands 600 meters above sea level. To honor and protect the site, it is safeguarded by Tōpuni status, “A symbolic cloak of protection.”
After lunch, there is free time available before regrouping at the carpark for the return trip to Christchurch.
