A Journey to the Heart of Coffee Country

As a surfer, my life is often dictated by the rhythm of the ocean, but every now and then, I find myself drawn to the mountains. This time, it was the allure of Coatepec, a place where the air is thick with the scent of coffee and the landscape is a lush tapestry of green. I had heard whispers of the Coffee Trails Tour and decided it was time to trade my surfboard for a day of exploration in the heart of Veracruz’s coffee country.

The journey began with a scenic drive from the coast, the salty breeze gradually giving way to the crisp mountain air. As we wound our way through the hills, the anticipation built. Coatepec, a Pueblo Magico, is renowned for its coffee, and I was eager to immerse myself in its rich history and vibrant culture. The town itself is a charming blend of colonial architecture and verdant landscapes, a perfect backdrop for a day of discovery.

Immersed in the Coffee Process

Our first stop was a coffee farm nestled in the hills, where the real magic happens. The guided tour took us through the coffee plantations, where rows of coffee plants stretched as far as the eye could see. Our guide, a passionate local, shared stories of the region’s coffee heritage, explaining the meticulous process of growing, harvesting, and processing the beans.

Walking through the plantation, I was struck by the dedication and care that goes into every cup of coffee. From the careful selection of ripe cherries to the art of drying and roasting, each step is a testament to the skill and tradition that defines Coatepec’s coffee culture. It was a humbling experience, one that made me appreciate my morning brew in a whole new light.

Savoring the Flavors of Veracruz

The highlight of the tour was undoubtedly the tasting session at Finca Don Silvano. Here, we were treated to a variety of coffee blends, each with its own unique flavor profile. As I sipped on the rich, aromatic brews, I couldn’t help but draw parallels to the waves I chase - each cup was a new experience, a different ride.

The tour concluded with a visit to the local market, where I stocked up on freshly roasted beans to take back to my nomadic home. As I left Coatepec, the sun setting over the mountains, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the heart and soul of Veracruz’s coffee culture. It was a reminder that, much like surfing, the best adventures often lie off the beaten path.
