A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Costa Rica

As a seasoned traveler and surfer, I’ve spent countless days chasing the perfect wave along the sun-drenched coasts of Central America. But every now and then, I trade my surfboard for hiking boots and venture inland to explore the lush, tropical landscapes that this region has to offer. My recent adventure took me to Curubandé de Liberia, where I embarked on the La Leona Waterfall Hike—a private experience that promised to be as breathtaking as the waves I ride.

The journey began with a drive from Playas del Coco, where my wife and I were staying. Our driver, Freddy, was a genuine soul who made the trip feel like a road trip with an old friend. We shared stories of our travels, and he patiently navigated the traffic, ensuring we arrived at our destination relaxed and ready for the day ahead.

Into the Heart of the Jungle

Upon arrival, we were greeted by Ronnie, our guide for the day. His enthusiasm for the outdoors was infectious, and as we set off on the trail, it was clear that we were in expert hands. Ronnie’s knowledge of the forest was unparalleled; he pointed out the unique flora and fauna, sharing fascinating tidbits that made the jungle come alive.

The hike itself was a thrilling adventure. We crossed streams, navigated rocky caves, and swam in the crystal-clear pools of Rio Blanco. The intimate nature of the tour, with just the two of us and Ronnie, allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the experience without the distraction of large groups. It was a refreshing change from the bustling beaches and crowded surf spots I’m used to.

A Day to Remember

As we approached the canyon, the sound of rushing water grew louder, and soon we were standing before the majestic La Leona Waterfall. The sight was nothing short of awe-inspiring, and we took a moment to soak it all in, feeling the cool mist on our skin.

After the hike, we were treated to a delicious lunch, followed by a visit to the Rio Negro hot springs. Soaking in the warm waters was the perfect way to unwind after a day of adventure. Bernie, another member of the team, had gone above and beyond to ensure our day was perfect, even arranging a surprise cake to celebrate our anniversary. It was a thoughtful gesture that made the day even more special.

Reflecting on the experience, I realized that while the waves will always call me back to the coast, there’s something equally captivating about the hidden gems inland. The La Leona Waterfall Hike was a reminder of the diverse beauty that Costa Rica has to offer, and I left with a renewed appreciation for the land and its people.
