Embark on a breathtaking journey from Cusco to Soraypampa, where the Andes reveal their majestic beauty. Join me as I trek through diverse landscapes, connect with nature, and discover the glacial gem of Lake Humantay.
The Journey Begins: Cusco to Mollepata
The day began in the early hours of the morning, as the city of Cusco was still wrapped in the gentle embrace of dawn. I was picked up from my hotel at 4:30 am, joining a group of fellow adventurers eager to embark on the Scenic Mountain Trek. As we left the city behind, the landscape began to transform, revealing the breathtaking beauty of the Andes. The drive through the towns of Izcuchaca and Limatambo was a serene prelude to the adventure that awaited us.
Arriving in Mollepata around 8:00 am, we were greeted by the crisp mountain air and the promise of a hearty breakfast. The small town buzzed with the energy of travelers preparing for their journey. As we packed our duffels, which would be carried by the horsemen, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of camaraderie with my fellow trekkers. We were all here for the same reason: to connect with nature and experience the majesty of the mountains.
Trekking to Soraypampa: A Path Through Nature
After a short bus ride to Challacancha, the real adventure began. The three-hour hike to Soraypampa was a journey through diverse landscapes, each more stunning than the last. The path led us to the viewpoint of Hornada Pata, where the valley split into two, offering a panoramic view that took my breath away. It was a reminder of the incredible biodiversity that thrives in these mountains, a testament to the resilience of nature.
As we continued our trek, I found myself immersed in the vibrant ecosystem around me. The air was filled with the songs of birds, and the ground was a tapestry of wildflowers. It was a biologist’s dream, a living classroom where every step revealed something new. The hike was challenging, but the beauty of the surroundings made every moment worthwhile.
Reaching Soraypampa, we were rewarded with a delicious lunch and the chance to rest our weary legs. The campsite was nestled in a valley, surrounded by towering peaks that seemed to touch the sky. It was a place of peace and reflection, a sanctuary where one could truly appreciate the wonders of the natural world.
Lake Humantay: A Glacial Gem
After lunch, we had the option to hike up to Lake Humantay, a glacial lake perched at 4,220 meters above sea level. The ascent was steep, but the promise of seeing the lake’s turquoise waters kept me motivated. As we climbed higher, the air grew thinner, and the landscape became more rugged, a stark contrast to the lush greenery below.
Reaching the lake was like stepping into a dream. The water was a brilliant shade of blue, reflecting the snow-capped peaks that surrounded it. It was a sight that stirred the soul, a reminder of the fragile beauty of our planet. Standing there, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness such a marvel.
The descent back to Soraypampa was swift, and as the sun began to set, the mountains were bathed in a golden glow. It was the perfect end to a day filled with adventure and discovery. As I settled into my tent for the night, I reflected on the journey so far, eager for the experiences that awaited us in the days to come.
