• Darfield - Begin the tour by traveling along the “Great Alpine Highway” west of Christchurch, crossing the Canterbury Plains. After about 50 minutes, take a brief pause in the quaint rural town of Darfield. The Darfield Bakery is a prime example of New Zealand cuisine, where freshly made food will be picked up for a picnic lunch.

• Lake Lyndon - Departing from Darfield and heading west towards the Southern Alps, enjoy a short stop for morning tea by Lake Lyndon.

• Cave Stream Scenic Reserve - Upon reaching Cave Stream, the guide will equip participants with caving gear and provide a safety briefing before proceeding to the cave entrance. The 600-meter limestone cave follows an underground river and typically takes groups 45-60 minutes to navigate. Inside, the crystal-clear water flows through spacious chambers and over small waterfall steps. The cave narrows to the width of a standard hallway, but standing is always possible. Back at the car park, hot drinks and a picnic lunch will be served while enjoying the mountain views.

• Kura Tawhiti Conservation Area - Castle Hill/Kura Tawhiti is one of New Zealand’s most breathtaking natural attractions. The guide will offer a tour and explain the area’s spiritual, recreational, and geological importance. If time permits, there will be free time to explore the boulders, with a meeting point back at the car park.

• Springfield - On the return journey, take a short break in Springfield for a photo opportunity with the giant doughnut, with its history explained by the guide. Upon returning to Lyttelton, participants will be dropped off at the port meeting point.

Morning - Cave Stream
The journey through the 594-meter limestone cave will take about 45 minutes. The path leads through crystal-clear waters, winding chambers, and small waterfalls.

Not keen on caving? No worries. Feel free to explore the nearby paths and trails or simply unwind with some afternoon tea in this tranquil setting instead of venturing into the cave.

Afternoon - Castle Hill/Kura Tawhiti
Castle Hill/Kura Tawhiti is a remarkable maze of enormous limestone boulders. This area holds great cultural and recreational importance and has been honored with Tōpuni status, symbolizing a protective cloak.

The guide will take you around, and if you’re interested, you can try bouldering to test your climbing abilities. Alternatively, spend your time exploring the endless maze of boulders.
