Highlights
  • Debre Libanos - Its one of the ancient and historical monastery in Ethiopia,Which is lying on northwest of Addis Ababa. The monastery was founded in the 13th century by Saint Tekle Haymanot, according to tradition; he meditated in a cave for 29 years. The monastery’s chief abbot, called the Ichege, was the second most powerful official in the Ethiopian Church after the Abuna.

The monastery complex sits on a terrace between a cliff and the gorge of one of the tributaries of the Abbay River. None of the original buildings of Debre Libanos survive, although David Buxton suspected “there are interesting things still to be found among the neighboring cliffs.” Current buildings include the church over Tekle Haymanot’s tomb, which Emperor Haile Selassie ordered constructed in 1961; a slightly older Church of the Cross, where Buxton was told a fragment of the True Cross is preserved; and five religious schools. The cave where the saint lived is in the nearby cliffs, which one travel guide describes as a five-minute walk away. This cave contains a spring, whose water is considered holy and is the object of pilgrimages.

Amazing Day Trip! - This day-trip is amazing. Sis has been a fantastic guide all the way through. I was very lucky to see a baboon colony. I learned a lot about religion in Ethiopia during the Monastery visit, and the view from he Portuguese bridge is outstanding. Sis is passionate about his country, the history and the culture. I learned a lot from him during the drive through a beautiful scenery.

Fantastic Day Trip Out of Addis!! - Highly recommend this tour. Sisay and Yuhin were fantastic and made sure that it was a bespoke experience! The drive to the monastery is gorgeous as well as the monastery itself which is a great way to learn about Ethiopia's long history. The baboons were also a highlight - we were lucky it wasn't raining too hard and so we got to see them. Last but not least, the views from the Portuguese Bridge and the lunch just close by are breathtaking. Again, very much recommend if you have a day to explore outside of Addis.

An awesome one-day experience! - An amazing experience. I was only in Ethiopia for a day, and this tour was exactly what I needed to feel like I got to know the place. Sis was my guide, and he made me feel safe the whole time, attentive to every detail, timetable, and with an excellent eye for the fabulous Geladas. Highly recommended experience, thanks SIS!

Exceeds expectations. - I was having a pretty rough morning until Sisay and I began our adventure. The entire day my jaw was on the floor meaning I was in awe of the experience. Every stop Sisay would explain the significance in great details. The day went according to plan and beyond exceeded my expectations. I will definitely book again and ask for Sisay. I could not thank him enough.

Good day in Addis Ababa. - We only had one day in Addis Ababa and we chose this tour. We were picked up at the hotel at the exact time, we rounded for three hours towards the north. The trip is long but interesting, we saw many people with typical clothes, rustic rural constructions and breeding animals along the way. We stopped for an Ethiopian coffee ritual, made in a clay jar on the fire accompanied by incense and Arruda branches. Arriving in Debre Lebanos we visit the most important Orthodox Christian temple in Ethiopia, with pilgrims coming every day from all over the country. It is a temple humble to Western standards, but full of meaning. The visit was guided by a monk, the women had to cover themselves with a veil. From there we went to a cottage on the edge of the canyon, where we made a small but very scenic trail on the edge of the slope, we passed through the so-called "Portuguese bridge", we saw waterfalls, and mostly we were lucky and we were able to photograph the cold monkeys, especially the leader of the gang, which has a magnificent presence. Then we had a typical meal in the cabin, followed by new coffee. Perfect program, though a little tired by distance and road conditions.

A Must Do for a Short Layover! - This trip was amazing! Sis, our guide was incredible and so accommodating for us. I was a solo traveler who ended up going with a lovely couple. Bring good walking shoes for the day. We had a fantastic time visiting the monastery, drinking coffee and hiking around to the Portuguese bridge. Sis was also really great at taking photos! Would 100% recommend this, especially if you have a short layover in Addis.

Amazing experience - Breathtaking scenery in the area around the monastery and the Portuguese bridge, and Sis was an extremely friendly and knowledgeable guide who went out of his way to make the experience as enjoyable as possible. Seeing the baboons up close and personal with the valley in the background was spectacular as well.

Great family day out of Addis: nature and culture - Being new to Addis, my partner, my daughter (20 months old) and me are willing to discover more about Ethiopia so, checking trip advisor we found this company, with so many good reviews and decided to give it a try, starting with a daytrip in the surroundings of Addis. Overall it was a great experience, we had a lovely family day! Guide (Yihun) and driver (Sisi) were extremely professional and friendly, very helpful, very caring with my daughther. They were very punctual and you can tell they know their job! 100% recommended. The vehicle for the daytrip was in great condition and very appropiate for any kind of road you can find in the country, I appreciated that very much because it makes us feel safe. They had water onboard for us to keep hydratated (particularly hot day). We left about 8 am from Addis and did a first stop, more than 2h later, for a coffee break in a lovely road coffee (that also sells locally made yogurt!) included in the pack. Then when we were almost arriving to Debre Libanos, we were lucky enough to pass by a big groups of local monkeys! We stopped for some minutes to take pictures and observe them. About 11 am we finally arrived to the Monastry. What you actually visit is not the monastry but its church and museum, accompanied by an English speaking guide who is one of the 800 monks living there (he is lovely, his English was a bit difficult to get). The place is quite impressive because its in the middle of a valley, the architecture is not so impressive but its still a beautiful church and you get to learn quite a lot of things about Ethiopia's history, religion, and this monastry, that is the biggest in the country. It's important to notice that women menstruating and couples who had intercourses in the last 48h cannot enter, it is written everywhere when you arrive, but no one told us in advance. After this visit that took about 1h30 (babies need to be in a carrier, not stroller), we did a sightseeing stop to admire the canyon (Jemma Valley), from my point of view, best part of this daytrip was the landscapes, amazing! And after rainy season (from Octobre), it should be even more impressive. Finally, we moved to the German-Ethiopian restaurant, 5 minutes away from Debre Libanos, a lovely restaurant and hotel that was founded by a German-Ethiopian couple years ago (they are not there anymore) on the edge of the canyon, where we had food (note that alcoholic drinks are not included). The food wasn't incredible, but the choices were nice for discovering local food (especially for those who come from abroad and don't know it already), and above all, the place has an incredible charm. From the restaurant, there is a path by which you access the Portuguese bridge, it is about 10 minutes by a steep path, the views are also beautiful, which was the last stop of our day. You can access by car to visit the bridge also but to go down to the bridge itself, the path is a bit complicated if you are not fit. However, we were content to see it from above and it was enough, the truth. It is not so much impressive in itself, but rather the fact that it was handcrafted and locally made. After buying a couple of souvenirs (orthodox crosses made in marbol, since it is an area of marbol extraction), we headed back to Addis, it took us about 3 hours to return too (mainly because of the traffic when arriving in the city). It was almost 6h of road for 4h visit, but it was also interesting for us seeing people and landscapes, villages, chatting with the guide, always very available all along the road. I will for sure hire this company again for further insights into Ethiopia!
