Highland Folk Museum - Travel back in time to explore how people lived and worked in the Scottish Highlands from the 1700s to the 1950s. The museum, featured in the ‘Rent’ episode of the Outlander TV series, is open from April to October.
Cairngorms National Park - As the UK’s largest National Park, Cairngorms is home to many rare and endangered wildlife species. Its breathtaking wilderness, with magnificent forests, rivers, and wild mountains, is the perfect spot for lunch.
Weather permitting, a picnic can be enjoyed on the sandy beach of Loch Morlich. There is also an opportunity to meet some of the park’s reindeer herd, introduced to Scotland in the 1960s.
Clava Cairns - Located a few miles south of Inverness, the 4000-year-old Prehistoric Burial Cairns of Clava are beautifully preserved and are said to have inspired Diana Gabaldon’s Craigh Na Dun from Outlander.
Inverness - Edinburgh
Loch Ness - Traveling south, the route follows the Caledonian Canal along the Great Glen from Inverness to Fort William. The Caledonian Canal spans sixty miles of stunning beauty.
A cruise on the Caledonian Canal to Loch Ness is available, followed by a visit to the ruins of Urquhart Castle. This castle, situated on the edge of the deepest part of Loch Ness, is where most sightings of the Loch Ness monster have occurred.
Neptune’s Staircase - Lunch is in the charming village of Banavie, where an easy walk along the Caledonian Canal offers stunning views of the Nevis mountain range and the famous Neptune’s Staircase. This remarkable flight of locks raises the canal by 19m (62ft) over a quarter of a mile.
Glencoe - The next stop is the spectacular Glencoe, known for the infamous Glencoe Massacre. Films such as James Bond’s Skyfall, Rob Roy, and the first episode of Outlander have featured Glencoe. Filming for the third Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, took place here in May and June 2003.
There will be an opportunity to stop, stretch your legs, and admire the breathtaking beauty of the Glen.
