Stuðlagil Canyon, situated in eastern Iceland, is renowned for its magnificent basalt column formations, which are among the largest in the nation. This awe-inspiring location is a haven for photographers, particularly when the river is clear. The striking blue-green color of the glacial river contrasts beautifully with the dark basalt columns, leaving visitors amazed. Although the canyon’s appearance varies with the seasons, it remains an enchanting destination throughout the year. The moderately challenging hike to the canyon takes approximately two hours for a round trip.
After exploring Stuðlagil, the journey continues into the highlands to Hafrahvammagljúfur Canyon, Iceland’s deepest canyon, with depths reaching 200 meters. Also known as Dimmugljúfur or “The Dark Canyon,” sunlight seldom reaches its depths. Along the route, there is a stop at a secluded natural hot spring, where guests can unwind in the tranquil wilderness. On the return trip, there is also an opportunity to view the Hálslón reservoir and the Kárahnjúkar dam, which houses Iceland’s largest power plant.
