Into the Heart of the Simien Mountains
The allure of the Simien Mountains had been calling to me for years, and finally, I found myself standing at the threshold of this majestic landscape. Known for its dramatic vistas and unique wildlife, the Simien Mountains National Park is a treasure trove for any nature enthusiast. As a wildlife photographer, I was particularly drawn to the promise of encountering the endemic Gelada Baboons and the elusive Ethiopian Red Fox.
Our journey began in Gondar, where we met our guide, a knowledgeable and passionate individual who would lead us through the mountains. The first day was a gentle introduction to the park’s beauty, as we traveled from Gondar to Sankaber. The landscape unfolded before us, revealing endless ridges and valleys that seemed to stretch into infinity. We opted for a short hike from Buyit Ras, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the scenery and catch our first glimpse of the Gelada Baboons, their scarlet chests glowing in the morning sun.
Arriving at Sankaber, our first campsite, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality. The staff had already set up our tents and prepared a delicious meal, allowing us to relax and soak in the surroundings. The night sky was a tapestry of stars, a reminder of the untouched beauty of this remote region.
The Thrill of the Trek
The second day of our trek took us from Sankaber to Geech Camp, a journey that promised breathtaking views and encounters with the park’s diverse flora and fauna. As we followed the ridge, the landscape opened up to reveal the Jinbar River cascading into the Geech Abyss, a sight that left us all in awe.
Our guide’s expertise was evident as he shared insights into the region’s unique ecosystem, pointing out various plant species and birdlife that call the Simien Mountains home. His pacing was perfect, allowing us to fully appreciate the environment without feeling rushed.
Reaching Geech village, our second campsite, we were once again treated to a feast prepared by our talented cook. The camaraderie among our group grew stronger as we shared stories and laughter around the campfire, the mountains standing as silent witnesses to our adventure.
Peaks and Valleys
The third day was perhaps the most challenging yet rewarding part of our trek. We set off from Geech to Chennek, a journey that would take us to some of the highest points in the Simien Mountains. The ascent to Imet Gogo was a test of endurance, but the panoramic views from the top were worth every step. Standing at an altitude of 3,926 meters, we were treated to a 360-degree view of the canyon below, distant ridges, and seemingly endless valleys.
Our lunch stop at Innateye Valley, at an altitude of 4,070 meters, was a moment of reflection and gratitude. The beauty of the Simien Mountains is truly unparalleled, a testament to the wonders of our natural world.
Descending to Chennek, our final campsite, we were filled with a sense of accomplishment and awe. The following morning, we embarked on a short hike to Buwahit peak, the second highest in the Simien Mountains, where we were fortunate enough to spot the Walia Ibex and Ethiopian Red Fox, a fitting end to our incredible journey.
Reflecting on my time in the Simien Mountains, I am reminded of the importance of sustainable travel and the role we play in preserving these natural wonders for future generations. The experience was not only a testament to the beauty of Ethiopia but also a reminder of the power of nature to inspire and rejuvenate the soul. I look forward to returning to this remarkable region, continuing my journey of discovery and conservation.
