• Wadi El-Rayan - Private pick-up from your hotel followed by a trip to Fayoum, located about 100 km from Cairo. The first stop is Wadi El Rayan, a natural depression in Egypt’s western desert, situated 42 meters below sea level. It features two lakes connected by Egypt’s only waterfall and was designated a Protected Area in 1989 to safeguard its biological, geological, and cultural resources. The Protected Area spans 1759 km² in the southern part of El-Fayoum. The waterfalls are a major attraction in Wadi El-Rayan Protected Area. The region preserves vast desert expanses with diverse landscapes and formations. The desert of Wadi El-Rayan is home to rare and intriguing wildlife, fossils from ancient epochs, and cultural heritage sites from past civilizations.
• Valley of the Whales (Wadi Al-Hitan) - Next, we will take a 4x4 Jeep ride to visit Whale Valley, Wadi Al-Hitan, in Egypt’s Western Desert. This site contains invaluable fossil remains of the earliest, now extinct, suborder of whales, Archaeoceti. These fossils illustrate a significant evolutionary story: the transition of whales from land-based animals to ocean-going mammals. It is the world’s most important site for demonstrating this evolutionary stage, vividly depicting the form and life of these whales during their transition. The number, concentration, and quality of fossils here are unparalleled, as is their accessibility and setting in a scenic, protected landscape. The fossils at Al-Hitan show the youngest archaeocetes in the final stages of losing their hind limbs. Additional fossil material at the site allows for the reconstruction of the environmental and ecological conditions of that era. Finally, we will drive you back to your hotel.
