• Canal Grande - After a 2.5-hour train ride from Florence, begin your Venice tour! The Grand Canal, the largest in Venice, is built in Venetian-Gothic style. Venice’s canals, which crisscross the city like streets, are one of its most notable features. The Grand Canal, the largest, divides the city in two and stretches four kilometers. • Chiesa di San Giorgio dei Greci - The Campanile di San Giorgio dei Greci, known as the ‘leaning clocktower,’ was designed by Simone Sorella and completed in 1592. It began tilting from the start of its construction. Like the adjoining church, the bell tower was built by and for Venice’s Greek community, mainly sailors and merchants.
• Strada Nova - The widest street in Venice. This route, consisting of wide streets connected by bridges, was created in the 19th century to provide rapid pedestrian access between Rialto and the railway station, demolishing buildings that would have otherwise created a long, winding path through narrow streets.
• Ponte di Rialto - The Rialto Bridge is the oldest of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal in Venice. It is renowned for its architecture and history and was the hub of Venice’s economy for years.
• Piazza San Marco - St. Mark’s Square is the main public square in Venice and one of the most fascinating squares in the world. Napoleon Bonaparte even called it “the most beautiful hall in Europe.” Near the square is the Patriarchal Cathedral Basilica of Saint Mark, commonly known as St. Mark’s Basilica. The interior of the domes, vaults, and upper walls are adorned with gold-ground mosaics depicting saints, prophets, and biblical scenes.
• Ponte dei Sospiri - Known as the Bridge of Sighs, this iconic Venetian monument was built in the 1600s and connects the Doge’s Palace with the historic prison across the canal. It was named because, during the Serenissima, prisoners would sigh at the prospect of seeing the outside world for the last time as they crossed it.
• Chiesa di San Zaccaria - The Church of San Zaccaria is a 15th-century former monastic church in central Venice. It is a large building located in Campo San Zaccaria. The current church was built between 1458 and 1515, and its facade is a harmonious blend of late-Gothic and Renaissance styles.
• Ponte dell’Accademia - The Ponte dell’Accademia is one of only four bridges that span the Grand Canal in Venice. It crosses near the southern end of the canal and is named after the Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia.
• Squero di San Trovaso - The Squero di San Trovaso is one of the oldest and most famous Venetian squeros. A squero is a traditional shipyard where small boats like gondolas are repaired. Take a look at how a gondola is made or repaired!
• Campo San Pantalon - Visit the beautiful Campo San Pantalon to admire the stunning painting by Banksy, commonly referred to as “the shipwrecked/migrant child.”
• Campo Santa Margherita - Campo Santa Margherita is a city square in the Dorsoduro district of Venice. It is located near university buildings and serves as a gathering place for students at the end of the day.
• Piazzale Roma - Piazzale Roma is a square at the entrance of the city, at the end of the Ponte della Libertà. Piazzale Roma and the nearby Tronchetto island are the only places in Venice’s urban core accessible to motor vehicles like cars and buses. At the end of the tour, take the train back to Florence (2.5 hours).
