A Warm Welcome in Frederiksted

As soon as I arrived in Frederiksted, I was greeted by the vibrant energy of the island. The sun was shining, the ocean was calling, and I was ready to dive into the local culture. Upon arrival, I was met by Carmen and Rochelle, two of the most welcoming and enthusiastic locals I’ve ever encountered. I couldn’t resist trying one on and snapping a few photos at the iconic “I Love STX” sign. It was the perfect start to what would be an unforgettable day.

Carmen and Rochelle guided us through a Crucian 101 dialect workshop, where we learned the nuances of the local language. It was fascinating to see how language shapes culture and identity, and I found myself eager to learn more.

Next, we were introduced to the art of blowing a conch shell. It was a skill that required patience and practice, and while I didn’t quite master it, the attempt was half the fun. The sound of the conch resonating through the air was a reminder of the island’s deep connection to the sea, something I could relate to as a former professional surfer.

A Taste of St. Croix

No cultural experience would be complete without indulging in the local flavors. Carmen and Rochelle had prepared a selection of seasonal fruits for us to sample, each one bursting with vibrant colors and flavors. From sweet mangoes to tangy tamarinds, each bite was a new adventure for the taste buds.

As we savored the fruits, Carmen surprised us with a special Happy Birthday sign for one of the guests. It was a thoughtful touch that highlighted the warmth and hospitality of the people of St. Croix. By the end of the day, I felt like I had not only experienced the culture but had also made new friends.

Leaving Frederiksted, I felt a renewed appreciation for the island’s rich heritage and the incredible people who call it home.
