Saddle Up for a Rainforest Adventure in Garabito
Trading my surfboard for a saddle, I embarked on a horseback adventure through Garabito’s lush rainforest, discovering the breathtaking “El Encanto” waterfall and vibrant wildlife. Join me as I recount this unforgettable journey.
A Journey Through the Jungle
As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours riding the waves of Central America’s pristine beaches. But this time, I decided to trade my surfboard for a saddle and explore the lush rainforests of Garabito on horseback. My wife and I, both adventurers at heart, were eager to experience the Rainforest Horseback Riding tour at The Park at Ocean Ranch. The promise of a 180-foot waterfall, “El Encanto,” and the chance to see white-faced monkeys, toucans, and macaws in their natural habitat was too tempting to resist.
The morning of our adventure, we were greeted by Greg, the owner of the park, and his friend AJ, a talented photographer. Greg’s warm demeanor and passion for his property were infectious. He spoke highly of his team, treating them like family, and it was clear that this was more than just a business to him. As we arrived at the park, we met our guide, Jesus, who would lead us through the jungle. His enthusiasm for the flora and fauna was evident, and his knowledge added depth to our journey.
Riding Through Paradise
The horses were well-cared for and perfect for riders of all experience levels. As we set off, the cool shade of the jungle enveloped us, providing a welcome respite from the sun. The trail led us through a river valley, where the sounds of the jungle came alive. Jesus pointed out the vibrant colors of the toucans and the playful antics of the monkeys swinging through the trees. It was a scene straight out of a nature documentary, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe at the beauty surrounding us.
As we approached “El Encanto,” the sound of cascading water grew louder, and the anticipation built. The waterfall was a sight to behold, its sheer height and power a testament to nature’s grandeur. We paused to take in the view, snapping photos and soaking in the moment. It was a reminder of why we choose this nomadic lifestyle, chasing experiences that leave us breathless and inspired.
A Perfect Ending
Our ride concluded at a different spot than where we began, a charming area with new buildings offering fresh juice, pineapple, and hammocks to relax in. The atmosphere was lively, with music playing and the sound of laughter from fellow adventurers. AJ was there, capturing memories for everyone, his camera clicking away as he moved between the zipliners and horseback riders.
Reflecting on the day, I realized that this experience was one of the highlights of our trip to Costa Rica. The combination of stunning natural beauty, the camaraderie of our guides, and the thrill of exploring the rainforest on horseback made it unforgettable. As we lounged in the hammocks, sipping on fresh juice, I knew that this was a place we’d return to, eager to create more memories at The Park at Ocean Ranch.
