Rain or Shine: Kayaking Adventures in Hoonah
Drawn by the allure of Hoonah’s serene waters, I embarked on a kayaking adventure with Fairweather Kayaks. Despite the rain, the experience was nothing short of magical, offering a glimpse into the vibrant marine life and breathtaking landscapes of Alaska.
A Rainy Welcome to Hoonah
Arriving in Hoonah, Alaska, I was greeted by a gentle drizzle that seemed to dance on the lush greenery surrounding the small town. The rain, however, did nothing to dampen my spirits. As a marine biologist, I have always found a certain charm in the rain, especially when it mingles with the scent of the ocean. The anticipation of exploring the calm waters with Fairweather Kayaks was exhilarating.
The team at Fairweather Kayaks was well-prepared for the weather, providing us with spray skirts, gloves, and life vests. These spray skirts were a revelation to me, functioning like overalls that shielded us from the rain as we sat in our kayaks. The small group of six, all fellow cruise ship passengers, added an intimate feel to the adventure. Our guide, Dave, was not only knowledgeable but also incredibly personable, making sure to engage with each of us as we prepared to embark on our journey.
Paddling Through Nature’s Wonders
As we paddled away from the harbor, the rain paused, allowing the sun to peek through the clouds and illuminate the serene waters. The shoreline of Hoonah unfolded before us, a tapestry of vibrant greens and the occasional splash of wildlife. Dave’s enthusiasm was infectious as he pointed out the majestic eagles soaring above and the schools of fish darting beneath our kayaks.
The highlight of our tour was undoubtedly the sighting of a mama bear and her cub nestled in the grass near the water’s edge. It was a moment of pure magic, one that extended our tour slightly but was worth every extra minute. The calm waters provided a gentle workout, and the rhythmic paddling was both calming and invigorating.
A Close Encounter with Marine Life
Toward the end of our tour, a boat met us on the water, offering a unique opportunity to interact with some of the local marine life. Holding a Dungeness Crab and a Sunstar was a thrilling experience, one that resonated deeply with my passion for marine biology. The connection to the ocean and its inhabitants was palpable, a reminder of why I chose this path in life.
As we returned to shore, the rain resumed, as if on cue, but it only added to the sense of adventure. The Fairweather Kayaks team ensured a smooth transition back to the shuttle area, where we were whisked back to the Excursion Hub. Reflecting on the day’s experience, I felt a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore such a beautiful part of the world, rain or shine. The allure of Hoonah and the warmth of its people made it a place I would eagerly return to, perhaps with my fiancé next time, to share in the wonder of this Alaskan gem.
