Zalipie, situated 120 km east of Kraków, is a quaint village that’s a major draw for tourists, despite not being a museum or an open-air exhibition site. It’s the vibrantly painted houses, fences, barns and even dog kennels that catch the eye. This tradition of adding a touch of color to the village spaces has its roots in history, when the villagers, living in relatively modest houses, grappled with soot from domestic stoves staining their walls. To brighten up their homes, the ingenious women of Zalipie began to adorn the soot-covered walls with white lime spots using birch twigs as makeshift brushes. Over time, these patterns evolved into intricate and vivid motifs gaining popularity and effectively becoming synonymous with Zalipie. Today, you’d find these embellishments in the most unexpected places, adding a natural charm to the village and reflecting the heartfelt effort put into creating them. Embark on a journey to Zalipie, in pursuit of color and cheer!
