Angkor Wat Sunrise and Explore All Major Angkor Temples in the Small Circle
Angkor Wat - Rise early at 4:30 AM to witness the sunrise at Angkor Wat, the national symbol of Cambodia and a source of pride for the Khmer people. Its silhouette, featuring five towers or three from a frontal view, is as iconic as the pyramids of Giza or the Taj Mahal. Angkor Wat is the largest historical temple monument globally, with its central tower rising 65 meters from the ground.
Angkor Thom South Gate - The South Gate boasts the best-preserved and restored stone causeway across the 100-meter-wide moat of Angkor Thom. The railings are adorned with the renowned rows of giant sculptures holding a Naga, whose seven heads fan out at the causeway’s outer end.
Angkor Thom - Sometimes spelled “Angkor Tom,” the name “Angkor Thom” was adopted after Angkor ceased to be the Khmer capital, meaning “Angkor Big” or “Capital Great.”
Bayon Temple - Constructed around 1200 A.D. in the center of Angkor Thom, the Bayon is the second most popular monument in Angkor, following Angkor Wat. It is famous for its numerous enigmatic “stone faces.” The identity or symbolism of these giant Buddhas remains unclear, making the smiling faces of Angkor Thom emblematic of Angkor’s mysteries.
Baphuon Temple - Located 300 meters northwest of Angkor Thom’s central Bayon face-tower temple, which is 150 years younger, the Baphuon was the largest Khmer temple before Angkor Wat was built. However, the massive Baphuon temple collapsed during medieval times.
Phimeanakas - Phimeanakas, meaning “Aerial Palace” or “Celestial Temple,” is sometimes transcribed as “Pimeanakas” or “Vimeanakas.” The name is derived from the Sanskrit words “Vimana” and “Akasha,” meaning “god palace” and “sky,” respectively. In modern Khmer, “Vimean” refers to a special or large place, while “akas” still means “sky.”
Terrace of the Elephants - The Elephant Terrace, also known as the Terrace of the Elephants, is an ancient wall and platform forming most of the western edge of the Royal Square of Angkor Thom. This square, located a few hundred meters north of the Bayon temple in Angkor Thom’s center, was the city’s secular core, hosting parades and festivals.
Terrace of the Leper King - Situated immediately north of the Terrace of the Elephants, in the northwest corner of the Royal Square of Angkor Thom, the Terrace of the Leper King is worth visiting and studying as the best example of an ornate open-air wall with deeply carved reliefs.
Ta Nei Temple - Ta Nei is a late 12th-century stone temple in Angkor, Cambodia. Built during King Jayavarman VII’s reign, it is near the northwest corner of the East Baray, a large sacred reservoir, and was dedicated to the Buddha.
Banteay Kdei - Banteay Kdei is easy to locate, as its eastern main gate is close to the junction where the Small Circuit and the Grand Circuit meet. Opposite the road is the vast Srah Srang reservoir, which was likely integrated into Banteay Kdei’s plan, possibly in connection with worshipping the Buddha of the East.
Discover Banteay Srei and Angkor Grand Circle with Sunset at Angkor Temple
Banteay Srei - When asked about the most beautiful temple in Cambodia, many visitors say Angkor Wat was impressive, but they loved Banteay Srei the most. Cambodians often say that one hasn’t truly seen Cambodia until visiting Banteay Srei. It is a top contender for the title of the world’s most beautiful temple. Banteay Srei is renowned for its abundance of carvings and the perfect harmony of architectural and sculptural art. Unlike Indian masterpieces, Banteay Srei is not overly ornate. Its design is discreet and more delightful than imposing, with modest dimensions that surprise many visitors with its small size.
Banteay Samre - Banteay Samré is a temple at Angkor, Cambodia, located 400 meters east of the East Baray. Built during the reigns of Suryavarman II and Yasovarman II in the early 12th century, it is a Hindu temple in the Angkor Wat style.
Preah Dak - Preah Dak Village is a renowned and popular destination for souvenirs, including objects and arts. Visitors can explore beautiful places and natural surroundings.
Preah Khan - In 1191, Preah Khan was dedicated to Jayavarman VII’s father, with the central statue named “Jayavarmeshvara,” meaning “Jayavarman, Lord of the World.” Jayavarman’s father was revered as a personification of the universal Bodhisattva of compassion and loving care, Avalokiteshvara, while the five-year-older temple Ta Prohm was dedicated to his mother as Prajnaparamita, the female embodiment of perfect wisdom.
Neak Pean - Neak Pean is truly exceptional, with a layout distinct from all other Khmer architecture. It was a temple on an artificial island with a 350-meter diameter in the vast Baray. Unlike other Mebons, the well-known island temples in the center of other reservoirs, Neak Pean features a round platform for the temple proper and a series of ponds arranged in a concentric Mandala structure.
Ta Som - Ta Som was constructed in the late 12th century by the great King Jayavarman VII. Little is known about the temple’s purpose, but it may have been dedicated to the King’s father or one of his teachers.
Eastern Mebon - East Mebon is a mountain temple built in the mid-10th century by King Rajendravarman II and dedicated to Shiva.
Pre Rup - Founded in 961, Pre Rup is the most significant legacy of Rajendravarman II (941-968), one of the prominent Angkor kings. After empire-founder Jayavarman II, Roluos-founder Indravarman I, and Angkor-founder Yashovarman I, King Rajendravarman II is regarded as the “Angkor-restorer,” as he decided to return the capital to Angkor.
