Perched on a hilltop and boasting stunning vistas of the seashore, Kota Melawati, an antique fortress, was constructed by the Malacca Sultanate in the initial stages of the 16th century.
Kuala Selangor was eventually captured by the Dutch in 1784 who fortified the fortress with heavy artillery and relabeled it as Fort Altingburg in honor of Willem Arnold Alting, who served as the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies from 1780 to 1797.
Presently, tourists can witness the remnants of the fortress, including its artillery, the mythic 100-step staircase, Royal Mausoleum, Maiden’s Grave, the infamous execution block, and an observatory tower (baitulhilal) that was used for the ritual of observing the new moon.
