Embrace the Wild: A Day with Elephants in Chiang Mai
In search of a unique and ethical adventure, I embarked on the Smile Elephant Chiang Mai experience. From hiking with elephants to splashing in the river, it was a day filled with joy and connection.
A Warm Welcome to Smile Elephant Chiang Mai
As a digital nomad, I often find myself seeking out unique experiences that allow me to connect with nature and local culture. When I heard about the Smile Elephant Chiang Mai experience, I knew it was something I had to try. The journey began with a scenic drive through the lush countryside of Kuet Chang, a welcome escape from the bustling city life. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendly staff who immediately made us feel at home.
The first part of the day was dedicated to learning about the elephants. We were given traditional clothing to wear, which added a touch of authenticity to the experience. The staff shared fascinating insights into the history and habits of these gentle giants, and we were introduced to three elephants who seemed just as curious about us as we were about them. Feeding them bamboo and taking photos was a delightful start to the day.
Hiking with Giants
One of the highlights of the day was the short hike up the mountain with the elephants. As we trekked alongside these magnificent creatures, the guides shared their knowledge about the local vegetation and the elephants’ natural behaviors. It was a humbling experience to walk in the footsteps of these majestic animals, and reaching the top of the hill offered a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape.
At the summit, we had the chance to interact more closely with the elephants, touching and rubbing their rough skin. It was a moment of pure connection, and I felt a deep sense of gratitude for being able to share this space with them. The hike back down to the camp was filled with laughter and camaraderie, as we all marveled at the unique bond we were forming with the elephants.
A Splashing Good Time
Back at the camp, we learned how to make vitamin-rich rice balls, which we then fed to the elephants. It was a hands-on experience that allowed us to contribute to their care in a meaningful way. After a short break, we made scrubs from tree bark and headed to the river for a refreshing splash with the elephants. The guides captured these joyful moments on camera, ensuring we had memories to cherish.
The day concluded with a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, where we feasted on pad thai, fresh fruit, chicken, egg rolls, and vegetables. It was the perfect end to an unforgettable day. The entire experience was conducted with the utmost respect for the elephants, and it was clear that their well-being was the top priority. I left Smile Elephant Chiang Mai with a heart full of joy and a newfound appreciation for these incredible animals. If you’re looking for an ethical and enriching adventure, this is one you won’t want to miss.
