ITINERARY FOR THE WEEKEND OF OCTOBER 26 - OCTOBER 27, 2024

Rain or Shine: Thrilling Day of the Dead Adventures in Leona Vicario

Experience the mystical allure of Leona Vicario during the Day of the Dead celebrations, where ancient traditions meet thrilling adventures amidst the rain-soaked ruins of Tulum and Coba. Discover the vibrant culture of Playa del Carmen as you immerse yourself in the heart of Mexico’s rich heritage.

Embrace the Mystical Aura of Leona Vicario

As the Day of the Dead approaches, the quaint town of Leona Vicario in Quintana Roo transforms into a vibrant tapestry of colors, sounds, and emotions. This is a time when the living and the departed come together in a celebration of life and memory. The weather might be overcast with a high chance of rain, but that only adds to the mystical atmosphere of the festivities. The air is thick with humidity, and the scent of marigolds fills the streets, guiding the spirits back to their loved ones.

Start your adventure with a visit to the local cemeteries, where families gather to honor their ancestors. The graves are adorned with flowers, candles, and offerings, creating a sea of flickering lights that dance in the gentle breeze. As you wander through the cemetery, you’ll hear the soft murmur of prayers and the soulful melodies of traditional music. It’s a poignant reminder of the deep connection between the past and the present.

For those seeking a more immersive experience, join a local family in their home as they prepare for the festivities. You’ll have the opportunity to learn about the customs and traditions that make the Day of the Dead so unique. From baking pan de muerto to crafting intricate papel picado, every moment is a chance to connect with the rich cultural heritage of Mexico.

Thrilling Adventures Amidst Ancient Ruins

For the thrill-seekers among you, the Riviera Maya offers a heart-pounding adventure that combines history, culture, and adrenaline. Despite the rain, the Riviera Maya Highlights tour is a must-do for anyone looking to explore the ancient wonders of Tulum and Coba. The tour starts bright and early at 7:00 AM, giving you a full day to uncover the secrets of these iconic archaeological sites.

At Tulum, you’ll stand in awe of the majestic ruins perched on a cliff overlooking the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. The ancient city was once a bustling port for the Maya civilization, and its well-preserved structures offer a glimpse into a bygone era. As you explore the site, you’ll feel the thrill of discovery with every step.

Next, venture into the jungle to uncover the hidden treasures of Coba. The towering pyramid of Nohoch Mul beckons you to climb its steep steps and take in the breathtaking views from the top. It’s a challenging ascent, but the sense of accomplishment you’ll feel at the summit is unparalleled. Don’t forget to cool off with a refreshing swim in a cenote, a natural sinkhole filled with crystal-clear water.

“MUST DO! - The views really will leave you speechless. Marco was a great guide. The food was amazing! And the cenote was a nice touch to cool off. Dress comfortably and be prepared for the heat!” (Reviewed at: 2024-08-18)

Cultural Immersion in Playa del Carmen

As the sun sets on your adventure, head to the vibrant town of Playa del Carmen for an evening of cultural immersion. The Tulum and Coba Tour offers a perfect blend of history and modernity, with a visit to the bustling 5th Avenue. Here, you’ll find a lively mix of shops, restaurants, and street performers, all set against the backdrop of the Caribbean Sea.

Stroll along the cobblestone streets and soak in the sights and sounds of this eclectic town. From the colorful murals that adorn the walls to the rhythmic beats of live music, every corner of Playa del Carmen is alive with energy. It’s a place where the past and present coexist in perfect harmony, offering a unique glimpse into the soul of Mexico.

As the rain begins to fall, seek refuge in one of the many cozy cafes or bars that line the streets. Sip on a steaming cup of Mexican hot chocolate or indulge in a refreshing margarita as you watch the world go by. It’s the perfect way to end a day filled with adventure and discovery.

“An all day adventure from ruins of the past to modern day nightlife - The ruins at Tulum were amazing and Coba would have been better if the guide had taken the group and had talked to us, just as he had in Tulum. Instead, we had one hour only to look at the ruins and rush back to the bus, with no knowledge of what we were looking at. The Cenote was the best part of the trip as it had been a hot day, the only problem was leaving it. The last stop was a surprise and once again, the group was left to wander the streets for only 45 minutes, without knowledge of what to do or to see. My opinion is the guide keeps the group together and should stay with the group most of the time to inform the tour group on what they are seeing and then give the group free time to wander if they wish. At both Coba and Playa, I was lost with no idea what to do or see in the time we were given. Fix this and this tour would be the best tour for all.” (Reviewed at: 2023-10-05)
