A Day in the Tropics: Zoo Miami Adventure
As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for unique experiences that can captivate both kids and adults alike. So, when I heard about Zoo Miami, the only tropical zoo in the continental United States, I knew it was a must-visit for our family. With its sprawling 750 acres and over 3,000 animals, Zoo Miami promised a day of adventure and learning, and it certainly delivered!
Exploring the World in a Day
Our journey began at the main entry, where the kids were immediately drawn to the vibrant American flamingo exhibit. The entryway, with its canopy structure and gift shop, set the tone for the day—a blend of education and fun. We decided to tackle the zoo by its five main exhibit sections: Florida’s Everglades, Asia, Africa, Amazon and Beyond, and Australia.
First up was the Florida’s Everglades exhibit. As a family, we love exploring local wildlife, and this section was a hit with its American alligators, Florida panthers, and North American river otters. The kids were fascinated by the bald eagles and spoonbills, and it was a great opportunity to teach them about the diverse fauna and flora native to Florida.
Next, we ventured into the Asian exhibit, where the Bornean orangutans and Sumatran tigers stole the show. The Wings of Asia aviary was a personal favorite, with its 300 rare birds of 70 species. It’s the largest open-air Asian aviary in the Western Hemisphere, and walking through it felt like stepping into a different world.
African Adventures and Amazonian Wonders
The African loop was a delight, with giraffes, zebras, and African bush elephants captivating our attention. The kids loved watching the chimpanzees and gorillas play, and we even got to feed the giraffes, which was an unforgettable experience for the whole family.
Moving on to the Amazon and Beyond section, we were greeted by the sight of giant otters and jaguars. The 48,000-gallon aquarium was a highlight, showcasing the vibrant aquatic life of the Amazon. The kids were particularly intrigued by the poison dart frogs and the harpy eagles, and it was a joy to see their curiosity sparked by the wonders of the rainforest.
Down Under and Beyond
Our final stop was the Australian exhibit, where we encountered koalas, kangaroos, and emus. The kids were thrilled to see the kangaroos hopping around, and the cockatiels added a splash of color to our day. It was a perfect way to end our global wildlife tour.
Zoo Miami is more than just a zoo; it’s a journey around the world, offering a glimpse into the diverse habitats and species that inhabit our planet. It’s a place where families can bond over shared experiences and create lasting memories. Whether you’re feeding giraffes, marveling at the majestic tigers, or simply enjoying a leisurely stroll through the lush gardens, Zoo Miami has something for everyone.
