• Mann Wildlife Learning Museum - The Montgomery Zoo spans 40 acres and is just a 10-minute drive from the historic downtown area. It showcases habitats from five continents with over 400 animals in natural, barrier-free exhibits. Visitors can dine at the Overlook Cafe, explore the gift shop, and enjoy a train ride around the park for a full experience. Additional attractions include the Zoofari Skylift, Giraffe Encounter, Petting Zoo, and Parakeet Cove. Note that the Zoofari Skylift requires an extra fee. The Petting Zoo is currently closed for entry due to COVID-19, but animals can still be viewed, petted, and fed from outside the enclosure.
• Rosa Parks Library and Museum - This museum is dedicated to honoring Rosa Parks and the many individuals involved in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The Children’s Wing features the Cleveland Avenue Time Machine, which delves into the history of “separate but equal” segregation.
• The Georgine Clarke Alabama Artists Gallery - Managed by the Alabama State Council on the Arts, this gallery showcases the work of living Alabama artists through rotating group exhibitions. It is located on the first floor of the RSA Tower in historic downtown Montgomery.
• Hank Williams Museum - A must-visit for country music enthusiasts, the Hank Williams Museum in Montgomery celebrates the life of the legendary country singer, Hank Williams. The museum offers a glimpse into the life of country music’s first superstar, featuring artifacts like his 1952 Baby Blue Cadillac. Hank Williams is celebrated as the Shakespeare of the common man, capturing the essence of hope, pain, and dreams in his music.
• Alabama State Capitol - For 150 years, the Alabama State Capitol has stood on a hill overlooking downtown Montgomery. This National Historic Landmark serves as a working museum of state history and politics. The Confederacy was formed in its senate chamber in February 1861, and in 1965, the Selma to Montgomery March for voting rights concluded at its steps, where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered a powerful speech to 25,000 people. The Alabama State Capitol is now a recognized stop on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail, along with over 100 locations across 14 states.
• The F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum - This museum, located in the former home of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, is the only one dedicated to their lives and legacies. The museum, situated on the first floor, is filled with artifacts and staged to reflect the era they lived in. F. Scott wrote “The Great Gatsby” and worked on “Tender is the Night” and a screenplay for “Red-Headed Woman” while residing here. Visitors can learn about this influential Jazz Age couple’s impact on American literature. The museum is located in Cloverdale, the largest garden-landscaped neighborhood in Alabama, just a 5-minute drive from downtown Montgomery.
• Civil Rights Memorial Center - The mission of the Civil Rights Memorial Center is to educate, reflect, and inspire action for civil and human rights. It houses the Civil Rights Memorial, designed by Maya Lin in 1989, which lists the names of those who lost their lives in the fight for freedom during the Civil Rights Movement from 1954 to 1968. The memorial honors activists targeted for their work, victims of vigilantes, and those whose sacrifices brought awareness to the struggle. The center also features a 75-seat theater, an interactive exhibit on current activism, and a classroom for educational activities.
• Freedom Rides Museum - In 1961, groups of volunteers known as Freedom Riders challenged segregated travel in the South, crossing racial barriers in depots and on buses. Although their journey didn’t start or end in Montgomery, Alabama, their arrival significantly impacted the city and the nation. The Freedom Rides Museum, opened in 2011, is located in the historic Greyhound Bus Station where the Freedom Riders arrived on May 20, 1961. Their efforts successfully ended racial segregation in interstate public transportation.
• The Davis Theatre - A landmark in downtown Montgomery, the Davis Theatre is one of the few historic theaters still standing in the South. It began as a Movie Palace for “talkies” and Vaudeville shows and is now operated by Troy University as a Performing Arts Theatre. Visitors can take a tour to learn about its history, but it’s recommended to contact the theater in advance, as tours cannot be conducted during performances.
• Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts - Home to over 4,000 works of art, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts primarily features paintings and sculptures by American artists from the 18th to the 21st century. The collection also includes Southern regional art, Old Master prints, and decorative arts. The ArtWorks Gallery, popular with all ages, offers an interactive space with 2D and 3D reproductions and art by regional artists. The John and Joyce Caddell Sculpture Garden, added in 2018, features both changing and permanent sculptural installations. Admission and parking are free, so plan a visit soon!
