The Call of Kilimanjaro

As a former professional athlete turned travel writer, I’ve chased adrenaline across the globe, from skydiving over the Swiss Alps to base jumping in the Grand Canyon. But the call of Kilimanjaro was different. It was a siren song that promised not just a physical challenge, but a journey through the heart of Africa’s wild beauty. Arriving in Moshi, the gateway to Kilimanjaro, I was greeted by the warm hospitality of the Altezza team. Their meticulous attention to detail was evident from the start, with thorough gear checks ensuring we were well-prepared for the climb. The excitement was palpable as we gathered for the briefing, our team of 11 climbers buzzing with anticipation.

The Ascent Begins

The journey from Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp was a mesmerizing introduction to the diverse ecosystems of Kilimanjaro. As we trekked through the lush rainforest, the air was filled with the sounds of exotic birds and the rustle of unseen wildlife. Our guides, Honest, Goodluck, Innocent, Aliakim, and the lead guide Osward, were more than just experts; they were storytellers, weaving tales of the mountain’s history and its secrets.

Each day brought new challenges and breathtaking views. The climb to Shira Plateau was a test of endurance, but the reward was a panoramic view of the Kibo Volcano, its snow-capped peak glistening in the sun. The camaraderie among our group was infectious, fueled by the guides’ humor and encouragement. They were our lifeline, offering support in every form, from medical checks to carrying backpacks when fatigue set in.

Reaching the Summit

The final push to Uhuru Peak was a night ascent, a grueling test of willpower and resilience. The altitude was unforgiving, but the guides’ expertise ensured our safety and success. As the first light of dawn broke, we reached the summit, the highest point in Africa. The view was nothing short of spectacular, a sweeping vista of the continent stretching out beneath us.
