- Jvari Church - One of Georgia’s most stunning UNESCO World Heritage Sites from the 6th century. The Jvari monastery is an outstanding example of early-medieval Georgian ecclesiastical art. According to tradition, in the early 4th century, Saint Nino, a female evangelist credited with converting Georgia to Christianity, erected a large wooden cross on the site of a pagan temple. Between 586-605, the present-day church was built around it. From here, we can enjoy breathtaking views of Mtskheta and the confluence of two rivers below.
- Svetitskhoveli Cathedral - After visiting Jvari Church, we drive down to the town of Mtskheta, dominated by the impressive Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century) - the “Life-Giving Pillar.” According to legend, the first church (4th century) here was built on the burial site of Christ’s robe. As the church was being constructed, the wooden pillar rose into the air, and magical chrism started to flow from it, healing all diseases, which gave the church its name.
The town of Mtskheta is renowned not only for its traditional architecture and ancient sites but also for its local open-air markets that we visit along the way.
- Uplistsiche Cave Town - We begin our drive along the Great Silk Road, where thousands of years ago, various merchants and traders passed through to reach the ancient cave town of Uplistsiche. This vast pagan complex features palaces, hallways, streets, and amphitheaters carved into the massive mountain slope. Established in the 2nd millennium B.C. as a pagan temple-town, it later became a significant base for Silk Road traders traveling from China to Europe.
- Stalin Museum - The final part of the trip includes a short photo-stop at the museum dedicated to one of Georgia’s infamous sons, Joseph Stalin. Here, we can see his original house where he was born in 1878, as well as his personal railway carriage used by him from 1941 onwards, including his attendances at the Yalta and Tehran conferences.
(We do not visit the museum building)
- Gori Fortress - Erected on a hill above the town of Gori, this fortress first appeared in 13th-century records, but archaeological evidence shows that the area had already been fortified during the Hellenistic Period. We approach the castle from its “Nine-Gated Wall” to enjoy superb views over the fort.
