Nizwa Souk - The tour begins in the morning with a drive towards Nizwa. Once the capital of Oman during the Al Yaruba Dynasty, Nizwa is home to the renowned Nizwa Souq (Market). Here, a diverse array of vendors line the streets, offering vegetables, pottery, jewelry, handicrafts, Omani sweets (halwa), spices, and souvenirs in authentic old market halls. The Friday cattle market is particularly fascinating, as locals gather to sell goats, cattle, sheep, and chickens in a lively, open marketplace.
-
Nizwa Fort Oman - Adjacent to the Souq is the Nizwa Fort and Castle. The Fort, constructed in 1649, and the Castle, built in 888, now serve as a museum offering breathtaking views of the ancient town and surrounding mountains. Visitors can explore the impressive Fort and Castle, which feature numerous passages and rooms. The Fort stands as an architectural testament to the economic and military prowess of the early Yaruba dynasty in the mid-17th century. It was a formidable military stronghold, designed to withstand even the most powerful attacks of its time, with traps laid along the corridors to deter intruders.
-
Jabal Akhdar - From Nizwa, the journey continues to Jebel Akhdar, known as the “Green Mountain,” one of Oman’s most picturesque areas and part of the Hajar Mountain Range. Jebel Akhdar is named for its lush terraced gardens surrounding the villages. The Saiq Plateau, accessible only by donkey for centuries, is home to a variety of fruits such as pomegranates, apricots, apples, olives, grapes, roses, peaches, and walnuts. There are intriguing walking paths in Wade Bani Habib, Shrejah, Al Ain, and Al Aqur.
-
Birkat Al Mouz - From the Green Mountain, the tour visits Birkat Al Mouz, which boasts a large Falaj system that irrigates date palms and vegetables for numerous orchards. Recognized by UNESCO, it is worth taking time to explore the old part of the village. From Birkat Al Mouz, the tour returns to Muscat.
