Visitors will explore the renowned Nizwa Souq (Market), where a diverse array of vendors offer their goods along the streets. Here, one can find vegetables, pottery, jewelry, handicrafts, Omani sweets (halwa), spices, and souvenirs, all sold in authentic old market halls that are rare to find. The Friday cattle market is particularly fascinating, as locals gather to sell goats, cattle, sheep, and chickens in a lively open marketplace.
-
Nizwa Fort Oman - Adjacent to the Souq is the Nizwa Fort and Castle. The Fort was constructed in 1649, while the Castle dates back to 888. Today, the Fort serves as a museum, providing stunning views of the ancient town and surrounding mountains. Visitors can explore the impressive Fort and Castle, which feature numerous passages and rooms. The Fort stands as an architectural testament to the economic and military accomplishments of the early Yaruba dynasty in the mid-17th century. It was a military stronghold designed to withstand even the most formidable attacks of the time, with traps laid along the corridors to deter any intruders who might breach the defenses.
-
Jabal Akhdar - From Nizwa, the journey continues to Jebel Akhdar, known as the “Green Mountain,” which is considered one of the most picturesque areas in Oman and is part of the Hajar Mountain Range. Jebel Akhdar is named for its green terraced gardens that surround the villages. The Saiq Plateau, accessible only by donkey for centuries, is home to a variety of fruits such as pomegranates, apricots, apples, olives, grapes, roses, peaches, and walnuts. There are intriguing walking paths in Wade Bani Habib, Shrejah, Al Ain, and Al Aqur.
-
Birkat Al Mouz - From the Green Mountain, the tour proceeds to Birkat Al Mouz, which features a large Falaj system that irrigates date palms and vegetables for numerous orchards. It is recognized by UNESCO and is worth exploring to discover the old part of the village.
