Palmer has been a center for agriculture since the early 1900s and hosts one of only two experimental farms in the state. In the 1930s, the town’s agricultural roots were strengthened by the Matanuska Colony Project. Over 200 families moved to the Palmer area as part of the New Deal, each receiving a 40-acre plot and a home. Farming today is quite different from a century ago. With farmland being scarce, farmers strive to make the most of their smaller plots.
The tour begins with a walking exploration of downtown Palmer, focusing on historical farms. After exploring the area’s past, participants will drive out of town to meet a local farmer and learn about the unique challenges of farming in the far north. The final stop will feature a small business that sources ingredients from an Alaskan farm.
Guests will enjoy a locally crafted beverage, included with their trip purchase.
