• Swissair Flight 111 Memorial - Swissair Flight 111 (SR111/SWR111) was an international passenger flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City to Cointrin Airport in Geneva, Switzerland, also a codeshare with Delta Air Lines. On September 2, 1998, the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, registration HB-IWF, tragically crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia, southwest of Halifax Stanfield International Airport. The crash site was 8 kilometers from shore, between Peggy’s Cove and Bayswater, resulting in the loss of all 229 passengers and crew. This was the deadliest accident in Swissair’s history and the second-deadliest aviation accident in Canada.
• Queensland Beach - Just a 40-minute drive from the Memorial, Queensland Beach Provincial Park offers stunning views and is a popular destination in Nova Scotia’s South Shore region. In 1753, immigrants from Halifax settled in Lunenburg, with Mahone Bay being part of this planned settlement. Led by mariner Ephraim Cook, these settlers were foreign Protestants from Germany, Switzerland, and Montbéliard. Mahone Bay became known for shipbuilding in the 18th century, with its history rooted in the Mi’kmaq’s birch bark canoes and the British’s industrial ship production.
• Lunenburg - The Old Town of Lunenburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Historic District, celebrated as one of North America’s best-preserved colonial settlements.
