Known for its iconic Peggy’s Point Lighthouse, this historic site is one of the most photographed lighthouses among the 160 in Nova Scotia. Standing for over a century, it majestically overlooks the Atlantic Ocean from its perch on massive granite boulders. Explore the picturesque surroundings before heading to the vibrant fishing village below, where shops, dining options, and the William de-Garthe Art Gallery await. A trip to Nova Scotia is incomplete without visiting Peggy’s Cove.
- Swissair Flight 111 Memorial - Swissair Flight 111 (SR111/SWR111) was an international passenger flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City to Cointrin Airport in Geneva, Switzerland, also a codeshare with Delta Air Lines. On September 2, 1998, the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, registration HB-IWF, tragically crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia, southwest of Halifax Stanfield International Airport. The crash site was 8 kilometers from shore, between Peggy’s Cove and Bayswater, resulting in the loss of all 229 passengers and crew. This was the deadliest accident in Swissair’s history and the second-deadliest aviation accident in Canada.
- Queensland Beach - Just a 40-minute drive from the Memorial, Queensland Beach Provincial Park offers stunning views and is a popular destination in Nova Scotia’s South Shore region. Although not large, this supervised beach (July and August) attracts many visitors with its warm air and sand. Enjoy a dip in the water or create sand art, but arrive early on hot days to secure a parking spot.
- Mahone Bay - Visit Mahone Bay to capture a photo of the famous three churches and explore a few local attractions. Continue to the Lunenburg Historic District. In 1753, immigrants from Halifax settled in Lunenburg, with Mahone Bay being part of this planned settlement. Led by mariner Ephraim Cook, these settlers were foreign Protestants from Germany, Switzerland, and Montbéliard. Mahone Bay became known for shipbuilding in the 18th century, with its history rooted in the Mi’kmaq’s birch bark canoes and the British’s industrial ship production.
- Lunenburg - The Old Town of Lunenburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Historic District, celebrated as one of North America’s best-preserved colonial settlements. Founded in 1753 and designated a UNESCO site in 1995, Lunenburg offers much to visitors. Historically reliant on offshore fishing, it now hosts Canada’s largest secondary fish-processing plant. The town thrived in the late 1800s, with many architectural treasures from that era. This vibrant fishing village boasts stunning architecture and a working waterfront, reflecting its rich history. Visit the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg Academy, or hop aboard the famous Bluenose schooner while enjoying the charm of this UNESCO heritage village.
