S21 Prison Toul Sleng & Killing Field, Wat Phnom & Independence Monument
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - Tuol Sleng was once a high school that the Khmer Rouge transformed into a center for interrogation, torture, and death. Today, it stands as a museum of torture, reminding visitors of the horrific atrocities that occurred in Cambodia. Out of the 17,000 people who entered this prison, only seven survived. Visiting this site is not for everyone, but it is crucial for understanding the depths of Cambodia’s past and the progress it has made since then.
Choeung Ek Genocidal Center - Prisoners from Tuol Sleng were taken along this route to meet their fate. Once an old Chinese cemetery, Choeung Ek was converted into an extermination camp for political prisoners. The remains of 8,985 people were exhumed from mass graves and are now housed in a memorial stupa here. Despite its tragic history, it is a peaceful place for reflection on the events that devastated Cambodia and its people.
Independence Monument - Built in 1958 and inaugurated in 1962 during the Sangkum Reastr regime, the Independence Monument commemorates those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s welfare. The monument’s serene and cool atmosphere makes it a popular destination.
Wat Phnom Daun Penh - Founded by Daun Penh (Grandma Penh), a wealthy widow, in 1372, the Wat Phnom Temple was built to house five Buddha statues she found in a river. She elevated a piece of her property to construct the temple. Over time, the site became sacred, with villagers building a temple on the hilltop and placing a standing statue of the goddess in a shrine on the eastern side. It remains a place for blessings and prayers.
Tamao Mountain Zoo & Central Market Phnom Penh
Central Market - We visit the impressive Central Market, a city landmark completed by the French in 1937. Known as Psar Thmei or New Market in Khmer, its large dome is well-ventilated, showcasing excellent design. The market offers a wide variety of goods, but buyers should be cautious of overcharging, a practice known locally as ‘shaving your head.’
Tamao Mountain - Located 40 km from Phnom Penh, Tamao Mountain is a large zoo and protected forest area covering 25,000 hectares. The site includes ancient temples, with Tamao Temple dating back to the 11th century and dedicated to Brahmanism. The zoo houses 84 species of animals and birds, many of which were rescued from illegal wildlife trafficking by the Ministry of Agriculture.
