Dolphins, Monkeys, and Coral Reefs: A Day in the Gulf of Nicoya
When the tides changed our plans, I knew the Gulf of Nicoya Adventure was going to be a day to remember. From dolphin sightings to snorkeling in warm waters, this journey was a sun-soaked escape into nature’s wonders.
Setting Sail from Puntarenas
The sun was just beginning to rise over the horizon as I made my way to the Muelle Turístico marina in Puntarenas. The salty breeze carried the promise of a day filled with adventure and discovery. I was about to embark on the Gulf of Nicoya Adventure—a journey that promised encounters with dolphins, spider monkeys, and the vibrant marine life of the coral reefs.
Our day began with a slight change of plans. Originally, we were to be picked up by boat at the Puerto Azul Hotel, but the tides had other ideas. Instead, we met at the port, just a short drive away. The anticipation was palpable as we gathered near the restrooms, waiting for our adventure to begin.
By 8:15 a.m., we were aboard a medium-sized boat, comfortably accommodating our group of 30-40 fellow explorers. The boat, though lacking restrooms, was perfect for the journey ahead. As we set off, the excitement in the air was infectious, and the fast-paced ride was a thrill in itself.
Encounters with Nature
Our first stop was a highlight of the trip—dolphin spotting. The boat slowed, and we all leaned over the sides, eyes scanning the water for any sign of movement. Suddenly, there they were, a pod of bottlenose dolphins, gracefully slicing through the waves. It was a moment of pure magic, one that reminded me of why I fell in love with the ocean in the first place.
Next, we made our way to an island inhabited by spider monkeys. These curious creatures swung from branch to branch, their playful antics drawing smiles and laughter from everyone on board. It was a reminder of the incredible biodiversity that thrives in this part of the world.
After about an hour, we arrived at Tortuga Island. For those of us eager to explore beneath the waves, the adventure continued with a snorkeling excursion. The warm waters of the Gulf of Nicoya were teeming with life, and as I floated above the coral reef, I was mesmerized by the vibrant colors and the dance of the fish below.
Island Time
Once the snorkeling was done, it was time to relax and soak up the sun on Tortuga Island. The island offered plenty of options for unwinding—chair rentals, a gift shop, and stands serving refreshing drinks in coconuts and pineapples. I opted for a coconut drink, the perfect companion for a lazy afternoon on the beach.
Lunch was served in a dedicated picnic area, a traditional Costa Rican meal that hit the spot after a morning of adventure. Rice, beans, salad, and meat were on the menu, and the flavors were as vibrant as the island itself.
With a few more hours to enjoy the beach, I took the time to reflect on the day’s experiences. The return journey at 3:00 p.m. was a chance to soak in the stunning views one last time, the sun beginning its descent as we made our way back to Puntarenas.
The guides, bilingual and accommodating, ensured that every moment of the trip was enjoyable. As we docked back at the marina, I felt a sense of gratitude for the day spent in the embrace of nature. The Gulf of Nicoya Adventure had delivered on its promise, leaving me with memories that would linger long after the sun had set.
