Highlights
  • Colosseum - Located directly east of the Roman Forum in the heart of Rome, Italy, is an elliptical amphitheatre known as the Colosseum. Despite its age, it is still the largest standing amphitheatre in the world and the largest ancient amphitheatre ever constructed. Under the rule of Emperor Vespasian (r. 69–79 AD), construction started in and was finished in AD 80 by his son and successor, Titus (r. 79–81). Additional alterations were implemented throughout Domitian’s rule (r. 81–96). The amphitheatre was dubbed the Flavian Amphitheatre by later classicists and archaeologists because of its affiliation with the family name (Flavius) of the three emperors who sponsored the work, known as the Flavian dynasty.
Brick-faced concrete and travertine limestone are used to build the Colosseum. At different points in its history, it was estimated to have held between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators, with an average attendance of about 65,000.
  • The Inn at the Roman Forum - Located in the heart of Rome, the Roman Forum, also called the Forum Romanum in Latin, is a rectangular forum (plaza) encircled by the ruins of several significant ancient government structures. Originally a marketplace, the residents of the old city called this area the Forum Magnum, or just the Forum.

For many years, the Forum served as the hub of daily life in Rome. It was the location of elections and triumphal processions, as well as the place for speeches, court cases, gladiatorial contests, and business transactions. The leaders of the city were honoured with statues and monuments here. It has been dubbed the most renowned gathering spot in history and the world, located in the centre of ancient Rome.Situated in the narrow valley that separates the Capitoline and Palatine Hills, the Forum is a vast ruin of architectural remnants and sporadic archaeological digs that draw at least 4.5 million tourists each year.

  • Palatine Hill - One of the oldest areas of the city, the Palatine Hill is the most central of the seven hills that make up Rome; it has been referred to as “the first nucleus of the Roman Empire”. The site is now mostly used as a sizable outdoor museum, and many artefacts from this and other ancient Italian sites are housed in the Palatine Museum.

There were built imperial residences beginning with Augustus. The majority of the homes on the hill were owned by the wealthy prior to the imperial era.

Originally, there were two summits atop the hill, named Palatium and Germalus, respectively, divided by a dip. By using the Forma Urbis, its perimeter was 63 acres, while by using the 4th-century Regionary Catalogues, it was 131 acres.
