Setting Sail on Lake Kivu

As a marine biologist with a penchant for water-based adventures, I was naturally drawn to the allure of Lake Kivu in Rwanda. The promise of tranquility and breathtaking hillside views was irresistible, and I found myself eagerly anticipating the boat trip that would take me across this stunning body of water. The journey began in Rubavu, where the gentle lapping of the lake against the shore set the tone for what was to come.

The boat, operated by Ames Boat Tours, was a charming vessel that seemed to glide effortlessly across the water. Our guide, Josiane, was a fountain of knowledge, sharing insights about the lake’s ecosystem and the local fishing practices. As we sailed, the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the water and the surrounding hills. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder of the beauty that exists in the world.

A Night with the Fishermen

One of the most exhilarating parts of the trip was the night fishing experience. We set off from Cormoran Lodge at Kibuye, following a trio of connected fishing boats. The anticipation was palpable as we watched the fishermen choose their spot, drop their nets, and place their lights to attract the fish. Despite a torrential thunderstorm, the atmosphere was electric, and I felt a thrill of excitement as we waited for the first catch of the night.

Tied to one of the fishing boats, we listened to the gentle conversations of the crew, the soft music playing from their phones, and the rhythmic sloshing of water between the boats. It was a magical experience, one that was both calming and exhilarating. When the nets were finally hauled up, the catch was surprisingly small, but the experience was no less rewarding. Josiane’s expertise and the camaraderie of the fishermen made it a night to remember.

Exploring the Islands and Beyond

The adventure didn’t end with the night fishing. The following day, we took a boat to Napoleon Island, where we climbed to the top and were rewarded with panoramic views of the lake. It was here that I met Denise Uwimana, an inspiring woman who shared her experiences of the Rwandan genocide. Her story was a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit.

Later, we embarked on another boat trip from Gisenyi to a coffee plantation. The journey was a fascinating exploration of how coffee beans are transformed from tree to cup. The rich aroma of freshly roasted beans filled the air, and I couldn’t resist sampling a cup of the local brew. It was the perfect way to end a trip that had been both enlightening and invigorating.
