Sailing into Serenity: A Day at Anguilla’s Prickly Pear Cays
Eager to explore the Caribbean’s hidden gems, I set sail on a traditional sloop to Anguilla’s Prickly Pear Cays. Join me as I recount a day filled with snorkeling, island feasting, and the soothing embrace of the sea.
Setting Sail on Tradition
The morning sun was just beginning to cast its golden glow over Sandy Ground as I made my way to the dock. The anticipation of another day on the Caribbean Sea was palpable, and I couldn’t help but feel a familiar thrill. As a former professional surfer, the ocean has always been my playground, and today, I was about to embark on a Traditional Sailing Adventure to Anguilla’s Prickly Pear Cays.
Greeted warmly by the crew, I was handed a mimosa, the perfect start to a day of sailing. Tradition, the beautifully preserved wooden sloop, was a sight to behold. Built in 1978, she carried with her the stories of a bygone era of sail-trading and rum smuggling. Captain Laurie, with his wealth of knowledge, shared tales of the ship’s storied past as we set off from Sandy Ground harbor. The sails were hoisted, and the engine silenced, leaving us with the soothing sounds of the sea and wind.
The journey to Prickly Pear Cays was nothing short of magical. The sun warmed our faces, and the sea breeze wrapped around us like a comforting embrace. As we sailed, I couldn’t help but scan the horizon for dolphins or even a glimpse of a whale, a habit from my surfing days. The camaraderie among the guests was instant, and it felt like we were all old friends sharing an adventure.
Discovering Prickly Pear Cays
As we approached the Prickly Pear Cays, the sight of brown boobies and their chicks was a welcome one. It was a sign of the rejuvenation of their population, and it added to the sense of wonder that enveloped the day. Anchoring offshore, we were ready to explore the underwater world that awaited us.
Snorkeling along the reef was a vibrant experience. The coral, though showing signs of bleaching, was still a stunning backdrop for the colorful fish that darted around us. I was relieved to find the waters free of jellyfish this time, allowing us to fully enjoy the underwater spectacle. Near the shore, yellowtail snapper glided gracefully above the sandy bottom, a sight that never fails to captivate.
Lunch was a feast for the senses. Anguillan lobster, perfectly cooked and served with sides of slaw, rice and beans, and curried potatoes, was a culinary delight. As we dined, the island tunes played softly in the background, creating a perfect Caribbean ambiance. Afterward, a game of cornhole on the beach or a siesta under the shade of palm fronds was the ideal way to relax before heading back to the boat.
The Journey Back
With the sun beginning its descent, we swam back to Tradition, ready for the sail back to Sandy Ground. The return journey was a time for reflection, as the day’s adventures played back in my mind. Fresh fruit and giant homemade chocolate chip cookies were a sweet treat, and the rum punch added a final touch of Caribbean flair.
As Sandy Ground came into view, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. The day had been a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and connection with the sea. It’s experiences like these that remind me why I chose this life, sharing the beauty of the Caribbean with others. Until the next adventure, I’ll carry the memories of this Prickly Pear day close to my heart.
