Sailing into Serenity: A Day on Anguilla’s Tradition
Drawn by the allure of a storied Caribbean sloop and the promise of pristine snorkeling, I embarked on a sailing adventure to Anguilla’s Prickly Pear Cays. Join me as I recount a day filled with oceanic wonders, a sumptuous lobster feast, and unexpected detours that made the experience unforgettable.
Setting Sail on Tradition
The Caribbean has always been my playground, a place where the ocean’s rhythm matches the beat of my heart. When I heard about the Traditional Sailing Adventure to Anguilla’s Prickly Pear Cays, I knew it was a journey I had to embark on. The allure of sailing on a vessel with a storied past, combined with the promise of pristine snorkeling and a lobster feast, was irresistible.
As I stepped aboard Tradition, the last surviving Caribbean sloop of her kind, I was greeted by the warm smiles of Laurie, Deb, and Brennon. Their passion for the sea was infectious, and their stories of Anguilla’s history and Tradition’s past life as a sail-trader and rum smuggler added a layer of intrigue to our voyage. With a mimosa in hand, I settled into the rhythm of the waves, watching for sea turtles and flying fish as we sailed towards Prickly Pear.
The journey was as much about the experience as it was about the destination. The gentle sway of the boat, the salty breeze, and the camaraderie among the small group of fellow adventurers made for a perfect start to the day. As we approached the cays, the anticipation of what lay beneath the turquoise waters grew.
Discovering Prickly Pear’s Underwater World
Arriving at Prickly Pear was like stepping into a postcard. The white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters beckoned, promising an underwater paradise. With my snorkel gear in hand, I plunged into the warm embrace of the Caribbean Sea.
The reef at Prickly Pear was teeming with life. Schools of vibrant fish darted around me, their colors a dazzling display against the coral backdrop. It was easy to lose track of time, mesmerized by the underwater ballet. My partner and I agreed that this was some of the best snorkeling we’d experienced in Anguilla, rivaling even the famed Little Bay.
After our aquatic adventure, we indulged in a sumptuous lobster lunch at the beach hut. The flavors of the Caribbean danced on my palate, a perfect complement to the morning’s activities. As we dined, the local bananaquit birds flitted around, eager for a taste of sugar from our hands. It was a moment of pure island magic.
A Serendipitous Detour to Little Bay
The wind had other plans for our return journey, dying down and necessitating the use of the motor. But this twist of fate led to an unexpected detour to Little Bay. Known for its snorkeling, Little Bay did not disappoint.
The waters here were a different kind of wonder. Massive sea urchins dotted the ocean floor, and a graceful sea turtle swam ahead, leading us on a gentle chase through the water. It was a fitting end to a day filled with discovery and delight.
As we motored back to Sandy Ground, the sun began its descent, casting a golden glow over the horizon. With a rum punch in hand and the taste of Tradition’s homemade chocolate chip cookies lingering on my lips, I reflected on the day’s adventures. This journey on Tradition was more than just a sailing trip; it was a celebration of the Caribbean’s natural beauty and a reminder of why I call this place home.
