Silfra Fissure Snorkeling: Wetsuit Tour with Underwater Photos from Reykjavik

Experience the privilege of snorkeling in the Silfra fissure, a unique underwater adventure in Reykjavik. Choose between wetsuit or drysuit options and capture unforgettable underwater photos.

Duration: 5 hours
Cancellation: 1 day learn more
Highlights

Heading out from your Reykjavík accommodation to Silfra takes 45 minutes. Once you have greeted your certified guide he or she will run through how the day will go and what to expect from the tour. Upon arriving at Silfra, you will don your gear listen in to a safety briefing and head to the glacially flooded fissure known as Silfra.

The fissure is ever changing and grows wider as the tectonic plates move 2cm further apart each year. The approximate time in the water is around 30-40 minutes, and you’ll finish the tour by warming up with a well earned hot chocolate.

We will take photos of you and do not charge extra commission. Normally included are 40-100 photos, this varies on group size and the skill level of the group. They are downloadable after a few days.

With the wetsuit option you’ll just need to wear your swim suit underneath it. Our guides highly recommended that you bring thick socks (preferably wool) as this will help to keep your feet cozy and warm while snorkeling!

We are the only company to offer wetsuit and drysuit. This means members of your group can book different options and still be able to stay together in the water.

Additional Information

Snorkeling in Silfra fissure is an exceptional experience bestowed by nature. Found in Thingvellir on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Silfra is a vast ‘split’ in the land resulting from the separation of two tectonic plates.

Opting for the wetsuit option advantages you with the ability to dive deep and gain a distinctive view of both underwater and above the water. This choice is a favourite among scuba divers lacking necessary scuba diving certifications. The drysuit, however, might be a better fit for those not so comfortable with swimming.

Prior exposure to snorkeling/ diving is beneficial for diving deep, though not compulsory. The drysuit option can be reserved for others in your group or yourself on a separate listing for the same tour.

Our groups always consist of a maximum of 6 people per guide, ensuring a more intimate and personalized experience. If your group comprises 7 or more, you might need to prepare your equipment together but would be partitioned during the water activity.

  • All participants must know how to swim and be comfortable in water
  • All participants must be able to communicate in English
  • Bring a swimsuit and a towel
  • Minimum age is 12 years, please reach out regarding younger participants & Participants over the age of 65 need to get a physicians approval

  • Don’t wear glasses, instead bring contact lenses or your own prescription mask (if you have one)
  • Recommended to bring a change of clothes (the drysuit has a very small chance of leaking)
  • Please dress according to weather - no heal or jeans
  • All participants heights, weights and age must be provided to local operator. If you do not provide at time of booking, please contact supplier immediately after booking to provide this information
  • Please note that that dry suits can sometimes feel quite tight and constricting, especially around the neck and wrists

Amazing!! - There really aren’t enough amazing things to say about this experience. It is SO cool!! Just a heads up, go for the dry suit. I booked a wet suit which was the wrong thing and they easily let us switch to a dry suit. We were not cold in the water even with water getting in our gloves. I would totally do this again. Definitely a great experience!

1000% recommended - Our Guide Fernando speaks very good French and is very attentive. The briefing could be done in French just like all the explanations during the outing. Despite the cold air (12°) and water (2°), the suits and hot chocolate on arrival keep you warm. We highly recommend this experience.

Water flying in Silfra - It was an unbelievable experience. It was like flying over a beautiful canyon. Our guide (Gretar) was amazing, very kind, patient and helpful! I’m so glad I got the chance to do this. Don’t miss your chance!! He gave great information on the car ride to and from the park too!

Incredible view - You are not paying to be comfortable. You are paying for the experience and the views in the water. My husband and I chose the dry suits and we were warm but couldn’t move a lot. If I did this again, I would choose the wetsuit to be more comfortable and have more mobility. We had to wait at least half an hour in our gear while waiting to get into the water which was not fun because we had a thing around our necks to prevent water from getting in and it slightly chocks you. The price I think is worth it for the pick up from the city. Our guide Grétar was awesome. He took amazing photos and told us loads of information about what we were seeing and about iceland. Super fun! Highly recommend. Once in a lifetime experience

Unique and fun experience - This was one of the highlights of my trip in Iceland! The water is amazingly clear and you’re able to see a lot of the rock structures under which is incredible! I would not miss this experience since it is so unique to snorkel in between plates and see amazingly clear water. If you’re worried about swimming or being cold, it’s not really cold at all w the dry suit:) Dori was our guide and she’s the best:) clear instructions and very professional! We had a lot of fun with her and she took some pretty good photos!

An amazing experience! - I had the best time on this snorkeling experience! I was admittedly wary of how cold the water would be, but the dry suit definitely works and felt fine throughout. The experience itself was incredible - the waters are pristine, the rock formations are interesting and everything just makes you appreciate the beauty that is Iceland. Our guides of course Gretar and Oliver were incredible as well. They were friendly and I could tell they love Iceland and teaching others about their home. They also gave us clear instructions, helped us with the equipment and I felt like I was in good hands. A must do!
