Additional Information

My dog Molly and I were astonished by the number of tourists who visited the Battlefield, spent less than 10 minutes at the site of Scotland’s greatest battle, and then left Bannockburn.

Molly taught me to greet visitors warmly, offer a heartfelt hug, and express gratitude for taking the time to honor our great heroes like Robert the Bruce and James Douglas, as well as all those who fought, died, and survived at Bannockburn.

Our outdoor tour of the Battlefield covers the Wars of Independence, the Battle, and its aftermath up to the present day. We will captivate you with stories of the main characters and the common folk who played a role in the battle.

We also offer a Stirling Bridge tour, the site of William Wallace’s greatest victory.

Freedom Tour Today is the ideal way to welcome visitors and learn more about why so many people cherish Scotland and its history.

Sadly, Molly passed away on February 15, 2024, with her Mum and Dad by her side. We miss her dearly <3

Well worth it. - We were a group of six friends who had previously done the Braveheart tour which encouraged us to go back and do the Bannockburn tout. We had had such a good experience on the first tour to Stirling Bridge that we looked forward to this second tour. Not the least of the reasons for doing this tour was that our guide on both the tours, Steven, was infectiously enthusiastic about the battle, but was also extremely informative. A couple of us were well up on the history, but most of us knew just a few basic facts. Steven told us all a lot of things new to us and so we all ended very well informed of this turning point in Scottish history, and it made a big difference that we could see ground on which the battle took place and were able to understand the importance of the terrain to the outcome of the events. The meeting point was the Bannockburn Centre which has a free car park and also a nice café serving very nice home-made food. There is not a lot of walking and the tour should be accessible to almost all levels of mobility. This tour was well worth going on.

Emotional! - Wonderful! Such emotion going around the battlefield with Steven who was very informative and amusing. Loved every minute. It was my husband's birthday and he discovered with pleasure that it was also the birthday of King Robert the Bruce as well on the same day. We thoroughly recommend a tour with Steven which was a great experience.

Bannockburn and Beyond - My wife and I decided to find a tour of Bannockburn Battlefield, and are we lucky we found Freedom Tour Today! Steven’s obvious passion for history clearly guides his career obligation to present the past. Although we could easily have walked the battlefield alone, Steven’s tour transcends the accepted, and sometimes simplified, version of history to include a variety of alternate theories and battlefield locations which take into account new information. At the end of the tour, we felt informed, entertained, but most of all welcomed to Scotland

Robert the Bruce's finest foot soldier gives bespoke tour. - I found Steve to be a fascinating font of knowledge and passion. I am writing about about British monuments to war and as an oral historian am keen that every memorial should have a contemporary voice. There is no better voice that Steve, whose engagement with the area and the stories and love of Scotland are unsurpassable. He brings the narrative into the present day, connecting then and now with local anecdotes and personalities, and he is a brilliant reminder that history really matters, it is key to our identity and ideas about ourselves and the countries we live in. Steve and I had much friendly banter about Scotland and England and Robert as a 'fair' king. All in all it was a fantastic day.

Well worth it! - This was an amazing experience! He was very nice, friendly, and welcoming! Out of all the tours I’ve done in Scotland this was definitely more informative and I actually learned alot about some of the History of Scotland. I definitely think this is a MUST DO if you are in Stirling. Even just passing through as it isn’t a super long tour!

Incredible experience - This was an incredible tour. As a battlefield enthusiast, I can’t recommend this tour more. Steven was not only super personable (he even brought me a coffee in the morning) but took me both on and off the beaten path for the battles of Stirling Bridge and Bannockburn. I had done a bunch of research on both battles before yet walking the ground w/ Steven as guide absolutely brought these historical events to life and I realized how little I really understood until I was being guided through it. If you love history and want a real sense of these two battles this is a must!

A warm welcome and terrific tour! - A terrific tour and guide - Stephen gave me the warmest welcome on the coldest of days to the Bannockburn site, beloved of both him and his gorgeous dog, Molly. His passionate and brilliantly informative tour of the site was fascinating, insightful and freshly told in Stephen’s own words - no hint of a spiel. It was balanced in content to include songs and poems, lesser known facts (eg on unsung heroes and heroines), and even some competing theories on how the battle was won. He went above and beyond to respond to all my questions - of which I had many, being there on a research trip. Highly recommend - any time of year!

The Bannockburn Stand... a view! - It was a great time spent on the heights over the Bannockburn, with Steven who was such an enthusiastic guide who loves this area which he roamed with his dear departed Molly, and who loves people. A great tour with Steve, as he showed and narrated the story in its physical location: great story of an incident that happened to Robert Bruce at the beginning of the battle when he took down the leader of the English who was charging him with a lance, while Bruce rode with a battle axe... to know how he defeated him, you will have to book up.
