Day 1: Arusha to Lemosho Gate, then to Big Tree Camp
Kilimanjaro National Park - Guests will be picked up from their hotel around 09:30 am and transferred to the Lemosho Gate on Kilimanjaro’s western side. After completing the registration process, the climb begins through the lush forests of the Lemosho Glades, reaching Big Tree Camp for the night.
Distance covered: 7km / 4.3mi Approx. time taken: 4 hours
Day 2: Big Tree Camp (2780m) to Shira 2 Camp (3900m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - Today covers significant ground, trekking across a plateau of grassy moorland and heather dotted with volcanic rock formations. The route passes through Shira 1 Camp, often offering views of Kibo Peak floating on the clouds, before heading to Shira 2. The trek gains considerable altitude, with some steep sections. As the journey continues to Shira 2, trekkers can view the Northern Ice Fields from the mountain’s western side, providing unique perspectives of Kibo. The steady climb across the Shira Plateau moorland aids acclimatization and offers stunning panoramic views.
Distance covered: 16.5km / 10.3mi Approx. time taken: 9 – 11 hrs
Day 3: Shira 2 Camp (3900m) to Barranco Camp (3960m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - The trek begins with an ascent offering expansive panoramic views, moving into the upland desert climatic zone and along the lava ridges beneath the Western Breach glaciers. The distinct pinnacle of the Lava Tower (4640m) serves as the high point for the day and a perfect lunch spot. In the afternoon, a steep descent leads to the night’s camp at the base of the Great Barranco Valley (3960m), sheltered by towering cliffs with extensive views of the plains below.
Distance covered: 10km / 6.2mi Approx. time taken: 7 hrs
Day 4: Barranco Camp (3960m) to Karanga Camp (3963m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - The day starts with a descent into the Great Barranco, a vast ravine, followed by a steep climb up the Great Barranco Wall, which separates trekkers from Kibo’s southeastern slopes. The climb is over rock, not technical but long and tiring. Passing beneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, the route heads towards the Karanga Valley. A steep climb from the valley leads to the night’s camp at Karanga Camp (3963m). For those feeling strong, a mid-afternoon acclimatization trek to around 4200m is available before descending back to camp for the night.
Distance covered: 5.5km / 3.4mi Approx. time taken: 5 hours
Day 5: Karanga Camp (3963m) to Barafu Camp (4640m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - After a restful night and breakfast, the journey continues to Barafu Camp (4640m). The climb traverses desolate scree slopes with no vegetation, making it a tough, steep walk, further challenged by the altitude. It’s crucial to stay hydrated and warm. An early dinner is followed by rest, as the climb to the summit begins between 11 pm and 12 am.
Distance covered: 3km / 1.9mi Approx. time taken: 3 hours
Day 6: Barafu Camp (4640m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) & down to Millennium Camp (3790m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - The ascent starts around midnight, climbing steeply to the summit glaciers. The climb on scree lasts 4 to 5 hours, gaining significant height over a short distance with spectacular views. Reaching the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) coincides with the first rays of the sun. The surrounding ice cliffs and views of Mawenzi Peak are breathtaking. Another hour’s walk leads to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). The descent retraces steps to Stella Point, then down the scree slope and track to Barafu Camp for breakfast, before continuing to Millennium Camp for a well-deserved rest.
Distance covered: 13.4km / 8.3mi Approx. time taken: 12 – 15 hours
Day 7: Trek Millennium Camp (3790m) to Mweka Gate (1630m)
Kilimanjaro National Park - A gentle trek descends through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where park formalities are completed, and certificates are awarded. Vehicles then transport guests back to the hotel in Arusha for a hot, welcoming shower.
Distance covered: 12.1km / 7.5mi Approx. time taken: 6 hours
