Crossing the Strait: A Journey Begins

As a wildlife photographer with a penchant for adventure, the allure of Morocco’s vibrant culture and stunning landscapes was irresistible. The proximity of Tangier to Tarifa, a mere 31 kilometers across the Strait of Gibraltar, made it an ideal addition to my itinerary. The journey began with a high-speed ferry ride from Tarifa, a thrilling experience as the wind whipped through my hair and the vast expanse of the sea stretched out before me. The anticipation of stepping onto African soil once more was palpable.

Upon arrival in Tangier, I was greeted by Mohammed, our charismatic tour guide, whose reputation as the ‘Mayor’ of Tangier preceded him. His warm welcome set the tone for the adventure that lay ahead. With Mohammed at the helm, every detail of the trip was meticulously planned, allowing me to focus on capturing the essence of Morocco through my lens. The first day was spent exploring the bustling medina of Tangier, where the vibrant colors and intoxicating aromas of the souks provided a sensory feast. The highlight, however, was the camel ride along the beach, a surreal experience that offered a unique perspective of the coastline where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea.

Discovering Asilah: Art and History

The journey continued to Asilah, a cultural gem adorned with vibrant murals and graffiti. The town’s artistic flair was evident at every turn, with local artists transforming the whitewashed walls into canvases of expression. As a photographer, I was in my element, capturing the interplay of light and shadow on the colorful facades. The Portuguese fortress, a testament to the town’s rich history, stood proudly against the backdrop of the azure sea.

Lunch in Asilah was a delightful affair, with the flavors of Moroccan cuisine tantalizing my taste buds. The hospitality of the locals was heartwarming, and I felt a deep connection to the culture and people. The overnight stay at a charming riad in Asilah was a welcome respite, offering a glimpse into the region’s authentic essence. The riad’s traditional architecture and serene ambiance provided the perfect setting to reflect on the day’s adventures and recharge for the journey ahead.

The Blue Pearl: Chefchaouen

The second day of the tour took us to Chefchaouen, the enchanting ‘Blue City’ nestled in the Rif Mountains. The town’s blue-washed streets and hidden corners exuded a mystical charm, inviting exploration and discovery. As I wandered through the labyrinthine alleys, I was captivated by the interplay of light and color, each turn revealing a new vista to capture.

The highlight of Chefchaouen was undoubtedly the breathtaking sunset, a symphony of colors that painted the sky as the sun dipped behind the city. It was a moment of pure magic, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that the natural world offers. The journey back to Tangier was filled with a sense of fulfillment and gratitude for the experiences and connections made along the way.
