ITINERARY FOR THE WEEKEND OF FEBRUARY 15 - FEBRUARY 16, 2025

Carnival in Trapani: A Weekend of Color, Culture, and History

Experience the vibrant Carnival celebrations in Trapani, Sicily, with a weekend filled with colorful parades, historical tours, and cultural immersion. With mixed weather on February 15th and clear skies on the 16th, it’s the perfect time to explore the city’s rich history and festive spirit.

A Carnival of Colors and Culture

As the sun rises over Trapani on February 15th, the city awakens to the vibrant hues of Carnival. The early morning rain gives way to partly cloudy skies, setting the stage for a day filled with festivities. The streets come alive with the sounds of laughter and music, as locals and visitors alike don colorful costumes and masks, embodying the spirit of this age-old tradition.

The heart of the celebration lies in the historic center, where parades wind through the narrow streets, showcasing elaborate floats and performers. The air is filled with the scent of traditional Sicilian street food, tempting passersby with arancini, panelle, and cannoli. As the day progresses, the weather clears, inviting you to explore the city’s rich history and culture.

For those seeking a deeper connection with Trapani’s past, the Salt Pans Tour offers a unique glimpse into the region’s salt production heritage. Available at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, this guided tour takes you through the Riserva Naturale Saline Di Trapani E Paceco, where you can witness the intricate process of salt harvesting. The tour concludes with a visit to the Museo del Sale, housed in a 15th-century mill, where you can learn about the history of salt and its significance to the local economy.

A charming, instructive experience - The grandchildren of the founder guided us to visit the museum and the basins for the production of salt. The museum displays the old tools and gives an idea of the hard working conditions of the past. Walking along the basins one can observe the different colours of water depending on salt concentration, which increases up to the point that allows salt harvesting. A charming, instructive experience. (Reviewed at: 2025-01-02)

Exploring Ancient Wonders

On February 16th, the weather shifts to clear skies, providing the perfect backdrop for a day of exploration. The cool temperatures and gentle breeze make it ideal for a journey through some of Sicily’s most iconic historical sites. Begin your day with the Sicilian Tour at 8:30 AM or 9:00 AM, which takes you on a captivating journey through Segesta, Erice, and the Trapani salt flats.

Segesta, with its ancient Doric temple and theater, offers a window into the past, where you can imagine the grandeur of Greek civilization. The temple, perched on a hill, provides breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, while the theater, still used for performances, showcases the architectural prowess of its creators.

Continue your journey to Erice, a medieval hamlet that enchants with its cobblestone streets and historic charm. As you wander through its narrow alleys, you’ll discover hidden gems, from quaint shops to ancient churches. The tour concludes with a visit to the Nubia salt flats, where you can sample the finest Sicilian cannoli, a sweet ending to a day steeped in history.

Absolute home run! - Our driver, Mimmo went above and beyond! He helped us find the birth record of my Nonno who was born in Paceco in 1916, and the town hall called a relative (I didn’t know about) to come and meet us! Erice, Trapani and Segesta were just incredible, I highly recommend this tour, and ask for Mimmo. (Reviewed at: 2024-10-05)
