A Step Back in Time: Discovering Zaanse Schans

As a museum curator with a passion for interactive exhibits, I am always on the lookout for experiences that blend history with hands-on learning. The kids were equally enthralled, and the workshop provided an excellent opportunity for them to learn about the cultural significance of clogs in Dutch history. They even got to try on a pair, which led to much laughter and a few wobbly steps. It was a joy to see them engage with history in such a tangible way, and it reminded me of the importance of preserving these traditions for future generations.

No visit to the Netherlands would be complete without indulging in some cheese, and the Catharina Hoeve Cheese Farm did not disappoint. Here, we were introduced to the art of cheese-making, a craft that has been perfected over centuries. The farm’s friendly staff guided us through the process, from curdling the milk to aging the cheese, and we were even able to sample a variety of delicious cheeses.

The kids were particularly taken with the cheese-tasting session, and it was a wonderful way to introduce them to the rich culinary heritage of the Netherlands. As we savored the flavors, I reflected on how experiences like these enrich our travels, providing both education and enjoyment for the whole family.
